Automated check-in is growing in popularity

A growing number of international tourists are benefiting from the automated immigration checkpoints at the nation’s major airports, the Ministry of Justice said yesterday, citing the latest statistics.

Electronic counters set up at the nation’s international airports recorded a daily average of 9,048 users this month, marking a 24 percent surge from the same period last year, the ministry said.

Incheon International Airport, the nation’s main gateway, and Gimpo International Airport in western Seoul have operated the unmanned immigration counters since 2008.

For tourists’ convenience, the immigration service will also put the system in place at the Korea City Airport Terminal and the Korea Trade Center in southern Seoul, which provide check-in services before passengers arrive at the airport, the ministry said.

The ministry said it will also add two more electronic counters at Gimpo International Airport and three more at Gimhae International Airport, which serves Busan, later this year.

To use the system, passport holders are required to preregister their photos and fingerprints at the airport immigration office.

Under a deal signed in April by Korea and the United States, the two sides’ immigration officials met in Seoul yesterday and today to discuss reciprocal use of unmanned immigration checkpoints by the end of this year, ministry officials said.

공항 ‘무인출입국 심사’ 이용객 급증

항공편으로 출입국 하면서 무인심사대를 이용하는 여행객이 급증하고 있다.

법무부는 올해 6월 현재 공항 무인심사기를 이용한 출입국자가 1일 평균 9천408명으로 지난해 같은 기간(7천590명)보다 24% 증가했다고 15일 밝혔다.

이에 따라 법무부는 이용자의 출입국 등록 편의를 위해 서울 강남 도심공항터미널과 코트라(KOTRA)에 등록 카운터를 추가로 설치했다.

또 올해 안으로 김포공항에 무인 출입국 심사대를 2대 추가하고 김해공항에도 새로 3대를 설치하는 등 전국으로 확대할 예정이다.

법무부는 미국 공항에서도 무인 심사대를 이용할 수 있도록 미국 측과 지난 4월 공동선언문을 채택한 데 이어 오는 15∼16일 서울에서 제2차 실무그룹 협의를 한다.

아울러 법무부는 국민의 무인 출입국 심사대 이용을 적극적으로 권장하고 이를 홍보하기 위해 무인심사대 브랜드의 이름을 'SES(Smart Entry Service)'로 정했다.

이 브랜드 명칭은 출입국심사 공무원의 딱딱한 이미지를 '친절과 미소'를 떠올리는 이미지로 바꾸기 위해 내부 공모를 거쳐 선정했다고 법무부는 설명했다.

김종호 법무부 출입국심사과장은 "SES는 17세 이상인 국민 누구나 이용할 수 있고 출국 당일 공항에서 수속할 때 지문을 등록하면 곧바로 적용된다"고 말했다.
