Ji still to decide on his future

Chunnam Dragons striker Ji Dong-won is weighing up whether to join PSV Eindhoven or Sunderland next season.

Ji, who was called up for the Olympic Asia Qualifier on Sunday against Jordan, said yesterday that he is expecting his new club to be confirmed in next few days.

“My team and agent are still negotiating closely [with two teams],” Ji said to Yonhap News Agency yesterday. “I personally want to play for the best team I can and where I can get more chances to play.”

It has been reported that Ji was to sign for English team Sunderland this month but the transfer deal has been slow to progress.

“We are still waiting for Chunnam’s official response,” Margaret Byrne, Sunderland’s legal director, said on Wednesday to Ilgan Sports. “There are many things to be cleared if Ji needs to be in our preseason tour. We can’t just sit and wait.”

Sunderland was reported to have offered a transfer fee of $1.5 million to Chunnam, twice that of his $750,000 buyout clause, but apparently the K-League club wasn’t satisfied and was waiting for a better offer.

While negotiations with Sunderland were starting to trail off, Eindhoven made an offer for the 20-year-old striker. It turned out that the Dutch club had sent their technical director Marcel Brands to check on Ji during last Saturday’s K-League match between Chunnam and Incheon United. Ji scored the opening goal of the game with a free kick.

Eindhoven have offered slightly better contract terms - an annual salary of about $1.2 million, according to someone close to Ji, who spoke to Ilgan Sports on condition of anonymity. The source also said that the 21-time Eredivisie champions have offered and a higher transfer fee than Sunderland.

The Korean footballer said both European clubs have their own advantages and disadvantages.

“Eindhoven is a great club that often tops the league, ” Ji said. “However, I heard that the Dutch league is not like the old days.”

As for Sunderland, Ji said “Sunderland is a midlevel team, so there is always change in the squad. But they are playing on the big stage called the Premier League.”

Football pundits are split on which club is better for the future Korean football star.

Those who want Ji to join Eindhoven say the striker needs to follow in the footsteps of players like Park Ji-sung and Lee Young-pyo after both moved to Eindhoven after the 2002 World Cup and then to the Premier League three years later. It is reported that Chunnam head coach Jung Hae-seong and former national team head coach Huh Jung-moo have recommended the Netherlands.

Others want to see Ji become the eighth Korean ever to play in the Premier League.

Lee Yong-soo, a football analyst for KBS, said Ji should choose Sunderland if his original goal was to play in England. “The Dutch league is just another means of going to the big league,” Lee said.

선덜랜드-아인트호번 사이에 두고 흔들리는 지동원

지동원(20·전남)의 마음이 흔들리고 있다.

PSV에인트호번 진출이 변수로 떠올랐다. 선덜랜드 입단에 사인만 남겨놓았던 상황에서 왜 이렇게 바뀐 것일까.

◇선덜랜드 ‘당장 계약하자’

선덜랜드의 입장은 단호하다. 당장이라도 계약을 하자는 것이다. 선덜랜드의 마가렛 번 법무 이사는 "전남의 공식 입장을 기다리고 있다. 협상이 마무리될 경우 니얼 퀸 선덜랜드 회장이 직접 한국을 찾을 계획이다"고 말했다. 하지만 선덜랜드로서는 마냥 기다릴 수는 없는 상황이다. 번 이사는 "지동원이 다음달 열리는 프리시즌투어에 참가하기 위해서는 워크 퍼밋 문제 등 해결해야 할 것들이 있다. 더 지체 될 경우 우리로서는 다른 선수를 찾아볼 수밖에 없는 상황이다"고 덧붙였다.

◇몽니부리는 전남

선덜랜드는 지동원의 바이아웃 조건인 이적료 70만 달러의 2배에 가까운 130만 달러를 전남에 제시했다. 지동원도 선덜랜드 진출을 강력하게 원했다. 잉글랜드 진출은 마무리 단계까지 갔다. 하지만 헐값 이적 논란에 휩싸여 팬들의 거센 비난을 받은 전남은 내부 결제를 이유로 질질 시간을 끌었다. 선덜랜드와 협상이 깨지거나 제3의 구단이 나타나기를 기대하는 모양새다.

전남이 사면초가에 빠져있을 때 PSV 에인트호번이라는 돌파구가 열렸다. 11일 PSV에인트호번의 마르셀 브란츠 기술 이사가 직접 인천월드컵경기장에 와 지동원의 경기력을 점검했다. 10일 입국한 거스 히딩크 감독의 입김이 작용한 것으로 보인다.

◇흔들리는 지동원

선수 본인이 강하게 선덜랜드행을 원하면 이적할 수 있다. 지동원은 가나전을 마치고 소속팀에 올 때만 해도 구단이 흔쾌히 동의해줄 것으로 기대했다. 그러나 구단의 반대와 시간 끌기에 부딪혀 크게 실망했다. 이때 에인트호번이 영입전에 뛰어들며 흔들리기 시작했다. 지동원의 한 측근은 "히딩크 감독은 물론 허정무 인천 감독, 정해성 전남 감독도 지동원에게 에인트호번행을 긍정적으로 추천한 것으로 알고 있다"고 귀띔했다. 지동원을 관리하는 에이전트 역시 전남 구단의 눈치를 보고 있어 지동원이 더 갈피를 못잡고 있다.

◇어디로 가야하나

잉글랜드 프리미어리그에 곧바로 진출하는 것과 네덜란드리그를 한 번 거치고 빅리그를 노리는 것에는 모두 일장일단이 있다. 하지만 선수만 놓고 생각한다면 곧바로 세계 최고 무대에 도전하는 게 더 낫다는 게 축구계의 중론이다.

이용수 KBS 해설위원은 “지동원은 아직 더 발전해야 하는 상황이다. 경기를 뛰는 것이 중요하다. 똑같이 경기를 뛴다면 리그 수준이 높은 선덜랜드가 좋다. 네덜란드는 빅리그를 가기 위한 수단이다. 선덜랜드의 제안이 없었다면 에인트호번이 좋겠지만, 빅리그에서 제안이 왔다면 그리로 가야한다고 본다”고 말했다. 신문선 MBC Sports+ 해설위원은 “판단은 본인의 몫이다. 네덜란드 진출이 연착륙의 효과는 있겠지만 꼭 거쳐가야 한다고 보지 않는다”고 조언했다.

네덜란드에 간다고 주전 보장이 되는 건 아니다. 또 2~3년 후 빅리그 진출을 약속받는 것도 아니다. 박지성 역시 네덜란드에서 맨유로 이적할 때 히딩크 감독이 반대했지만 결단을 내렸다. 언제가 됐든 빅리그 진출은 위험을 감수하는 도전일수밖에 없다. 박주영도 프랑스 리그가 아니라 빅리그로 곧바로 진출했다면 지금보다 더 성장했을 가능성이 크다. 박주영이나 조광래 대표팀 감독이 이달 초 지동원의 잉글랜드 진출을 격려한 것도 이 때문이다.
