Korean War to come alive on tech-savvy Web site

NEW YORK - A group of South Korean and U.S. academics is working to revisit the Korean War six decades later in a tech-savvy way: by digitizing photos, maps, official documents and video footage of interviews with war veterans.

The move comes as the two Koreas this week mark the 61st anniversary of the start of the 1950-53 war, in which a total of 21 nations dispatched troops to help the South fight against the invading North, supported by its communist ally, China.

A Web site will be launched around October that will include a search menu and social networking service, according to the seven-member team, led by Han Jong-woo, adjunct assistant professor of political science at the Maxwell School at Syracuse University.

“There are Internet sites related to the Korean War, but there is no site yet to systemically collect wide-ranging materials and enable searches as well,” Han said. “Once the digital archive is established, you will be able to study the Korean War in detail, shown from the angle of war veterans.”

Han’s team has already acquired more than 14,000 items from 34 former U.S. soldiers who took part in the 1950-53 conflict. The materials include pictures taken by the veterans during the war, as well as letters, diaries, maps, posters and draft and retirement documents.

Efforts to digitize the collection and interview the veterans are under way, he said. The videotaped interviews provide vivid accounts of the veterans’ experiences during the war and lessons for the next generation. Han said his team also plans to step up efforts to collect data from Korean War veterans from other nations, including North Korea and China.

The nations that fought for the South include the U.S., Britain, Turkey, Canada, Australia, France, the Netherlands, New Zealand, South Africa, Colombia, Greece, Thailand, Ethiopia, the Philippines, Belgium and Luxembourg. The other five - Norway, Denmark, India, Italy and Sweden - dispatched medical units.

한국전쟁에 참전한 세계 각국 용사들이 소장한 자료와 이들의 인터뷰를 디지털화해 보관하는 디지털 아카이브가 미국에서 만들어진다.

한종우(49) 미국 시러큐스대학 맥스웰 대학원 겸임교수(정치학과) 팀은 한국전쟁 참전 용사들의 자료를 모은 전용 인터넷 사이트를 개설한다고 22일 밝혔다.

한 교수팀은 우선 미국 참전 용사들과 캐나다, 한국, 중국 등의 자료를 모아 오는 10월께 전용 웹페이지를 구축한 후 다른 참전국을 대상으로 자료 수집을 확대할 계획이다.

이를 위해 올여름에는 캐나다와 한국에서도 자료 수집 작업을 시작할 예정이며 앞으로 중국 등 북한편에서 참가한 나라의 참전 용사들이 가진 자료뿐만 아니라 북한 자료도 모을 계획이다.

1950년 6월부터 1953년 7월까지 3년 넘게 벌어진 한국전쟁에 참전한 국가는 미국, 영국, 캐나다, 프랑스, 호주 등 전투병 지원 16개국에 의료 지원국까지 포함해 20여개국에 달한다.

한 교수는 "한국전쟁과 관련한 인터넷 사이트들이 있지만, 광범위한 자료를 체계적으로 수집하고 분류해 검색까지 가능하게 한 곳은 아직 없다"며 "디지털 아카이브가 구축되면 전쟁에 참가한 용사들의 시각에서 본 한국전쟁의 모습을 상세하게 볼 수 있을 것"이라고 의미를 부여했다.

인터넷 웹사이트에는 참전 용사들이 직접 찍거나 구한 사진, 편지, 일기, 포스터, 지도, 전단, 징집·퇴역 증명서 등 공식 문건과 개인 자료들이 디지털화돼 올려진다.

자신들이 보관하고 있던 자료를 제출한 참전 용사들의 인터뷰 동영상도 웹사이트에 담긴다. 1시간 분량의 인터뷰에는 성명, 나이, 참전 시기, 소속 부대, 퇴역 시기, 인상에 남았던 전투, 후세대에 전하고 싶은 전쟁의 교훈 등이 담긴다.

한 교수팀은 현재까지 시러큐스 인근의 참전 용사 34명으로부터 1천400여 점의 자료를 받아 디지털화 작업을 진행하고 있으며 이들에 대한 인터뷰를 진행하고 있다.

한 교수팀은 인터넷 웹사이트에 검색 서비스를 제공해 특정 검색어를 입력하면 문자, 사진, 동영상, 음성의 형태로 된 모든 관련 정보를 볼 수 있게 만들기로 했다.

이를테면 1950년 11월 미군이 함경남도 개마고원 장진호에서 대규모 중국군 병력에 포위돼 전멸 위기에 빠졌다가 탈출에 성공한 `장진호 전투`를 입력하면 관련 문서, 사진 등은 물론 전투에 참가했던 참전 용사의 생생한 증언 동영상까지 볼 수 있다.

또 인터넷 웹사이트 구축과 함께 트위터, 페이스북 등 소셜네트워크서비스(SNS)에도 계정을 만들어 한국전쟁 사이버 커뮤니티를 구축하기로 했다.

한 교수팀은 한 교수와 시러큐스대 김영식, 최인경 (정보통신 대학원), 박진희 (영화학과), 이지니(건축학과), 매트 휘트놀 (맥스웰 대학원), 조 리오그란데 (전직 고등학교 교사)씨 등 7명으로 구성돼 있다.
