FIFA vice president talks about future of Asian football

For some Korean football officials, Prince Ali bin al-Hussein of Jordan may be a name they won’t forget.

The chairman of the Jordan Football Association became the youngest vice president in FIFA history when he beat Korean business tycoon Chung Mong-joon in an election in Qatar on Jan. 5.

Chung, who is currently the Korea Football Association honorary president, had been seeking his fifth consecutive term as FIFA vice president but had to give up his position to the 36-year-old Bin al-Hussein, who collected 25 of 45 votes.

The victory was certainly a disappointment for Korean football officials and fans, but the half brother of King Abdullah II of Jordan and the president of the West Asia Football Federation said on Wednesday that it is time to forget about the election and think about the future of Asian football together.

Before the second leg of the Olympic Asia qualifier between Korea and Jordan, Prince Ali invited Korean media for a press conference and stressed there should be more friendly matches between Asian countries, expecting that such movement will help develop Asian football.

Ilgan Sports, the JoongAng Ilbo’s daily sports newspaper, was there for this Q. and A., which was conducted in English, printed in Korean and translated back into English.

Q. What’s your vision as a FIFA vice president?

A. I want countries from the Middle East, Far East and Central Asia to increase their power through the AFC and grow together. We all have different cultures and customs, but we can be one family through football. I want to raise the level of Asian football in this way.

How did you manage to beat Chung Mong-joon in the FIFA vice presidential race?

Dr. Chung has been working for FIFA for more than 16 years and he is a great man. I respect his ability and achievements in world football. But 16 years is a long time and I thought we needed a change at that moment. I think that is why I was elected. I will visit Korea in the near future and ask for advice from Chung on Asian football development.

What’s your plan to bond Asian countries that have different cultures?

I’m first planning to expand football’s popularity among women and children. Promoting cultural exchange between countries is important. There are successful Asian football players like Park Ji-sung who moved to Europe to play, but there should be also more player exchanges on this continent. I’m planning to visit each AFC country, including Australia, to find out what’s really essential for us.

What’s your plan to balance the level of football between East Asia and West Asia?

I think other countries should work hard to catch up to strong football countries like Korea, Japan and Australia. To achieve this, some countries should initiate reforms. For example, I recently visited Indonesia and found a lot of problems in their football association. The election for chairman wasn’t transparent and there were some problems with their management. If there’s something wrong, we need to improve it.

알리 빈 알 후세인(36) 국제축구연맹(FIFA) 부회장이 정몽준(60) 대한축구협회 명예회장에게 화해의 손을 내밀었다. 알 후세인 부회장은 22일 요르단축구협회에서 일간스포츠와 만나 "이제 아시아축구는 함께 성장해야한다"며 "지난 16년간 FIFA 부회장으로 활동하며 아시아 축구에 많은 공헌을 한 정 명예회장에게 아시아 축구 발전의 길을 묻겠다"고 말했다.

요르단의 왕자로, 요르단축구협회장이기도 한 알 후세인 부회장은 1월 카타르에서 열린 FIFA부회장 선거에서 5선에 도전장을 낸 정 명예회장을 밀어내고 권좌를 물려받아 스포트라이트를 받았다. 유효표 45표 중 25표를 획득해 20표를 받은 정 명예회장을 5표 차로 꺾었다. 국제축구계에서 영향력이 미미했던 삼십대 중반의 젊은 인물이 '아시아 축구의 거성'을 떨어뜨리고 최연소 FIFA부회장으로 탄생한 순간이었다. 언론들은 '무혈 혁명'이라는 표현을 썼다.

요르단축구협회 엠블럼이 박힌 폴로 티셔츠에 수수한 청바지 차림으로 취재진을 맞이한 알 후세인 부회장은 "아시아가 축구를 통해 하나로 뭉칠 수 있다는 확신을 갖고 있다"면서 "축구 강국인 한국이 중심에 서야 한다"고 강조했다. 이어 "FIFA 부회장으로서 아시아 축구계의 잘못된 부분들을 적극적으로 바로잡을 것"이라며 강력한 개혁 의지도 천명했다.

-FIFA부회장으로서 갖고 있는 비전은 어떤 것인가

"아시아축구연맹(AFC)을 통해서 중동과 극동, 중앙아시아의 축구가 힘을 모아 동반 성장하길 바란다. 서로 문화와 관습은 다르지만 축구를 통해 하나가 될 수 있다. 이를 통해 아시아 축구의 위상을 업그레이드시키겠다."

-FIFA 부회장 선거에서 5선에 도전장을 낸 정몽준 명예회장을 이길 수 있었던 원동력은

"닥터 정이 16년간 FIFA를 위해 열심히 일하신 것을 알고 있다. 정말 대단한 분이다. 세계축구에 대한 그의 영향력과 능력을 존경한다. 하지만 16년은 긴 시간이고, 이젠 변화가 필요한 시점이다. 그것이 내가 당선된 이유다. 조만간 한국을 방문해 닥터 정을 만나뵙고 아시아 축구 발전을 위한 조언을 구할 생각이다."

-문화와 관습이 서로 다른 아시아 국가들을 하나로 묶을 방안은

"어린아이와 여자들에게 축구를 보급해 저변을 넓히는 방법을 우선적으로 생각하고 있다. 한편으로는 아시아 각국의 적극적인 교류도 중요하다. 박지성처럼 유럽 무대에 진출해 성공을 거둔 아시아 선수들도 많이 있지만, 아시아 내에서의 인적 교류도 더욱 많이 이뤄져야 한다. 조만간 호주를 포함한 AFC 가맹국을 두루 방문해 무엇이 필요한지 직접 살필 계획이다."

-아시아에서 한국축구가 차지하는 위상을 어떻게 평가하나

"한국축구가 갖는 영향력은 엄청나다. 많은 아시아 국가들이 한국과 일본에게 배워야 한다. 한국이 아시아축구 성장의 중심에 서야 한다."

-동아시아와 서아시아 간 경기력의 균형을 이룰 비결은

"한국, 일본, 호주 등 축구 강국들을 따라갈 수 있도록 나머지 나라들이 힘써야 한다. 이를 위해서는 개혁 노력이 절실하다. 최근에 인도네시아를 방문했는데, 축구협회에서 많은 문제점을 발견했다. 회장을 뽑는 선거 과정이 투명하지 않았고 운영 과정에도 많은 문제점이 있었다. 잘못된 부분들에 대해서는 개선이 이뤄져야 한다."

-왕자의 신분으로 굳이 축구에 집중하는 이유는

"스무살이던 1991년부터 축구에 관심을 가졌다.(알 후세인 부회장은 영국 유학 생활 중 아스널의 경기를 보고 축구의 매력에 빠진 것으로 알려져 있다). 어떤 분야에 대해 열심히 하는 것 못지 않게 즐기며 하는 것이 중요하다고 본다. 내게 축구는 그런 존재다."
