Skeleton of athlete’s long-lost mother unearthed

Nine and a half years after she disappeared, the remains of Kim Hwan-soon, mother of former national handball player Lee Nam-su, were found buried in a drainage canal of a field in Jeongeup, North Jeolla.

The police said they couldn’t determine the cause of death because of missing body parts. The field is 1.24 miles away from the house from which Kim vanished.

The National Forensic Service confirmed Monday through DNA tests the clothed skeleton was that of Kim Hwan-soon, who was 64 when she disappeared on December 15, 2001.

On May 7, a farmer surnamed Kim was dredging the drainage canal for his field when he came upon the buried remains, according to Jeongup police precinct.

“For the past 10 years, I checked the canal frequently,” said Kim, 64, in an interview with the JoongAng Ilbo on Wednesday, “so if someone fell into it, I would not have missed it.”

Kim immediately reported his find to the Jeongeup police precinct.

Kim, whose husband passed away in 1986, was living by herself after all seven of her children had married.

In the afternoon of Dec.15, 2001, Kim was seen at a bank in town and a supermarket. One of Kim’s relatives talked to her on the phone after her supermarket visit. That evening she disappeared. Kim was discovered to be missing, when her eldest son Lee Kyung-su, 51, visited her home to take her to a dentist in Seoul on Dec. 22.

“At the time, the table was set, the ondol (floor heating system) was on, and house’s front door was locked,” the eldest son told police.

Police assume Kim went outside her house in the middle of dinner. Kim’s family believes that she went out in the middle of dinner to meet someone who killed and buried her.

Kim was financially well-off, police said, and lent money to some of her neighbors. Police suspect a borrower might have killed her.

“When I think that my mother was buried in the cold ground for the past 10 years, I can’t sleep,” said former athlete Lee Nam-su, who now lives in the United States, in a telephone interview with the JoongAng Ilbo on Wednesday. “I want to find out the cause of her death and put her soul at ease.”

Family members told the JoongAng Ilbo that when they reported Kim’s disappearance, the police thought she ran away and didn’t search for her carefully.

“At first, we investigated it as a simple runaway,” a spokesman for the Jeongeup police said, “but after family members’ objections, we expanded the investigation”.

The JoongAng Ilbo visited the scene of the discovery of Kim’s remains. The drainage canal was about 3 to 4 meters (9.8 to 13 feet) below the field, 1 meter wide and 20 to 30 centimeters deep. Police say that even if Kim accidentally fell into the canal, she wouldn’t have been seriously injured.

지난달 7일 전북 정읍시 칠보면의 한 농수로에서 백골이 발견됐다. 이 지역 주민인 김모(64)씨가 일주일 전 농수로 정리 작업을 하면서 논둑으로 퍼올려 놨던 흙이 마르면서 옷조각에 싸인 백골이 모습을 드러낸 것이다. 김씨는 즉시 정읍경찰서에 신고했다. 경찰의 의뢰로 유골의 DNA를 분석한 국립과학수사연구원은 지난 20일 “분석 결과 백골은 2001년 12월 실종된 김환순(당시 64세·여)씨로 나타났다”고 밝혔다. 백골이 발견된 농수로는 김씨의 집에서 불과 2㎞ 거리다. 김씨의 시신은 어째서 10년 동안이나 묻혀 있었던 것일까. 경찰은 이 사건을 원점에서 재수사하겠다고 밝혔다.

　숨진 김씨는 1990~2000년대 초 국가대표 핸드볼팀의 골키퍼로 맹활약했던 이남수(36·여)씨의 어머니다. 이씨 어머니는 86년 남편과 사별한 뒤 농사를 지으며 7남매를 홀로 키웠다. 자식들이 출가한 뒤 시골집에서 홀로 살아오던 김씨는 어느 날 홀연히 자취를 감췄다. 7남매는 직접 전단까지 만들어 배포하며 어머니를 찾았으나 허사였다. 이들의 안타까운 사연은 여러 차례 언론에 소개되기도 했다.

　10년 만에 주검으로 나타난 어머니의 유골을 접한 이씨 등은 22일 “누군가 어머니를 살해한 뒤 암매장한 것으로 보인다”고 말했다. 경찰과 가족의 말을 종합해 보면 김씨는 2001년 12월 15일 오후 시내 은행과 수퍼 등에서 목격됐고, 친척과 통화를 하기도 했다. 그러다 자신의 집에서 저녁을 먹던 중 어디론가 나간 뒤 돌아오지 않았다. 실종 사실을 가족들이 안 건 그로부터 일주일 뒤. 장남 이경수(51)씨가 어머니를 모시고 서울 치과에 가기 위해 고향집을 찾아갔을 때였다. 경수씨는 “당시 거실 밥상엔 밥이 그대로 남아 있었고 보일러도 켜져 있었다. 출입문 또한 곱게 닫혀 있었다”고 기억했다.

저녁을 먹던 중 누군가와 급히 만나기로 해 서둘러 나간 것으로 추정된다는 것이다. 형편이 괜찮았던 김씨는 가까운 이웃들에게 돈을 빌려주고 얼마간의 이자를 받기도 했다고 한다. 이 때문에 가족들은 채무 관계에 따른 범죄 가능성을 제기한다. 가족들은 “사건 당시에도 이런 사실을 경찰에 알렸으나 경찰은 단순가출로 보고 제대로 수색조차 하지 않았다”고 주장했다. 이에 대해 정읍서는 “처음엔 단순가출로 수사했으나 가족들이 이의를 제기해 실종을 염두에 두고 수사를 확대했었다”고 말했다.

　경찰은 일단 실족과 살해 등 여러 가지 가능성에 대해 조사할 방침이다. 그러나 10년 전 자료에 의존할 수밖에 없는 상황이라 수사가 쉽지 않을 전망이다. 유골이 일부 유실돼 국과수 또한 정확한 사인을 찾지 못했다.

　22일 본지가 직접 현장을 확인해 보니 농수로는 논에서 3~4m 아래쪽에 있었고 폭이 약 1m에 20~30㎝ 깊이로 물이 고여 있었다. 실족을 해도 크게 다칠 정도는 아니었다. 유골을 처음 발견한 김씨는 “지난 10년간 농수로를 자주 살폈기 때문에 사람이 (땅에 묻히지 않고) 실족해 떨어져 있었다면 발견하지 못했을 리 없다”고 말했다. 2007년 결혼하면서 미국에 살고 있는 이남수씨는 기자와의 통화에서 “어머니가 10년 동안이나 그 차가운 바닥에 있었다고 생각하니 너무 원통해 잠을 이룰 수 없다”며 “지금이라도 사건 원인을 명백히 밝혀 어머니의 한을 풀어 드리고 싶다”고 말했다.
