Outgoing U.S. envoy Stephens lauds DJ’s vision

Kathleen Stephens, the U.S. ambassador to Seoul, paid tribute to Korea’s late President Kim Dae-jung in a recent blog posting, saying she respected his vision for a peaceful reunification of the Korean Peninsula.

Writing on her blog earlier this week, the top U.S. envoy recalled her recent bike trip along Korea’s west coast, which included a speech at a ceremony marking Korean Memorial Day on June 6.

“We honor the memory of President Kim Dae-jung, and we remember President Kim’s vision of eventual reunification through reconciliation,” she wrote, quoting her speech. “We look forward to the day when the whole Peninsula is free and all Korean people experience a reconciliation befitting the sacrifice we honor.”

The former president died from complications of pneumonia in August 2009 at the age of 85. His tumultuous life fighting for democracy and reconciliation with North Korea led him to receive the Nobel Peace Prize in 2000, shortly after the first inter-Korean summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-il.

During the speech at a park on Jindo Island in South Jeolla, Stephens also looked back on South Korea’s rise from the ashes of the 1950-53 Korean War to become one of the world’s leading economies. In the spirit of Memorial Day, she also recalled the many sacrifices of U.S. and South Korean troops who fought together against a North Korean invasion during the conflict.

“Looking back, it is clear that those sacrifices were not in vain. On the contrary, they were the prologue for the peace and prosperity we now enjoy,” she wrote. “The hard work and sacrifice of millions of Koreans since that time has created one of the greatest national success stories in modern history.”

The U.S. is “honored” to be a partner of Korea, Stephens added, saying the two nations should stick together for an even better future.

스티븐스 대사 “DJ의 화해로 통일하려던 비전, 실현하자”

이임을 앞둔 캐슬린 스티븐스 주한 미국대사가 “김대중 대통령의 화해를 통한 통일이라는 비전을 실현하기 위해 결의를 다지자”고 말했다.

한국명이 ‘심은경’인 스티븐스 대사는 지난 20일 ‘심은경의 한국이야기(blog.daum.net/ambassadorstephens)’라는 블로그에 한반도 통일과 동북아 평화를 거론하며 김 전 대통령의 통일론을 강조했다.

한국문화 탐방차 자전거로 서해안을 일주 중이던 지난 6일 진도 군강공원에서 열린 현충일 기념식 연설을 통해서다.

2008년 부임한 이래 이명박 정부의 대북정책을 가까이서 지켜본 스티븐스 대사가 임기 막바지에 ‘햇볕정책’으로 상징되는 김 전 대통령의 남북 화해·협력 정신을 얘기하고, 직접 블로그에도 소개한 것이다.

스티븐스 대사는 연설에서 “자유를 위해 목숨을 바친 한국인과 미국인들의 숭고한 희생은 결코 헛되지 않았다”며 “한국은 세계적인 경제 발전과 역동적인 민주주의를 이뤘고 신생 민주국가들이 부러워하고 있다”고 치켜세웠다.

그는 “그러나 아직 끝나지 않은 일이 있다”며 “성공에는 늘 책임이 함께하기 때문에 한·미 양국은 한반도, 그리고 동북아의 평화적인 미래를 위해 협력해야 한다”고 주문했다.

스티븐스 대사는 이어 두차례 세계대전과 공산주의, 냉전을 겪은 미국 신학자이자 철학자라는 라인홀드 니버의 말을 인용했다.

“아무리 선한 일이라도 상대방의 입장에서는 우리가 보는 만큼 선하지 않다. 그래서 우리에게는 사랑의 완결체, 즉 용서, 화합이 필요하다”는 내용이었다.

그러고는 “김 대통령의 화해를 통한 통일이라는 비전을 기억한다. 김 대통령의 비전을 실현하기 위해 결의를 다지자”며 연설을 맺었다.

스티븐스 대사는 “외국어 학습에서 최고의 방법은 자신이 좋아하는 일을 찾아서 외국어로 그 일을 하는 것이라고 학생들에게 말했다”면서 “나는 자전거·등산·테니스 덕분에 한국어를 배우는 데 도움을 받았다”고 전했다.
