Rains lash most of nation with typhoon coming

The summer rainy season came in like a lion, flooding fields and city streets and cancelling flights across the nation.

The weekend will be soggy too, with Typhoon Meari approaching from Taiwan.

From Thursday to yesterday, areas in the central parts of the country, including Daejeon and South Chungcheong, received up to 171 millimeters (6.7 inches) of rain according to the Korea Meteorological Administration. Daejeon was hit even harder, with 20 millimeters pouring down per hour, drenching the city’s 29 main streets. There was little let up for residents with over 200 millimeters of rain.

Most passenger ships on the western coast were forced to stay in port. All traffic between islands on the west coast and Incheon was cut off yesterday.

According to a spokesman of the Korea Airports Corporation yesterday, all flights to and from Pohang, North Gyeongsang, were cancelled due to strong winds and heavy clouds.

The rains also caused worry about the areas where animals were buried after being culled during the foot-and-mouth disease outbreak that started last November.

But according to South Chungcheong officials, no leakage from the burial pits was reported as of yesterday afternoon.

More rain is to be expected over the weekend with Typhoon Meari approaching. According to the KMA, southern regions will receive over 200 millimeters of rain today. In South Chungcheong and other southern regions, there will be torrential rain averaging 20 millimeters per hour with lightning and thunderstorms.

Typhoon Meari, which was named by North Korea, will rise up through Jeju Island in a northward direction from May 26 and reach the Chinese border around May 27.

The weather agency also announced that July is going to be soggy, with more rainfall than the average, which ranges from 187 to 397 millimeters.

주말 최고 300㎜ 비…구제역 침출수 비상

5호 태풍 ‘메아리’가 북상하면서 주말 전국적으로 최고 300㎜ 안팎의 많은 비가 내릴 것으로 예보됐다. 장마전선에다 태풍까지 겹치면서 강풍과 폭우가 예상돼 구제역 매몰지 관리에도 비상이 걸렸다.

　메아리는 26일 오전 제주도 서해상을 지나 늦은 밤과 27일 새벽 사이에 경기 서해안에서 황해도 서해안으로 상륙할 전망이다. 기상청은 “상층 기류 흐름에 따라 태풍의 상륙 시점과 지점이 유동적”이라며 “축대 붕괴나 산사태, 저지대 침수 등 피해가 나지 않도록 각별히 주의해 달라”고 당부했다.

　일부 구제역 매몰지에서 피해가 발생했다. 충북 충주시가 앙성면 중전리 저전마을 구제역 매몰지를 다음주까지 이전하겠다고 밝힌 가운데 임시 설치한 저류조에서 침출수가 넘쳐 하천으로 흘러들었다. 24일 주민들에 따르면 밤새 내린 비로 인해 시가 최근 논 옆에 설치한 매몰지 침출수 저류조에 모여있던 오염된 물이 흘러 넘쳤다. 충주시청은 이날 오후까지 저류조에 있던 침출수 20t을 빼낸 뒤 침출수 추가 유출을 막기 위해 10t짜리 저류조를 긴급 설치했다. 시 관계자는 “매몰지가 아니라 침출수 저류조에 많은 빗물이 한꺼번에 흘러들어 물이 넘친 것”이라고 말했다.

　대전·충남 지역에서는 도로와 농경지가 침수되고 여객선 운항이 끊기는 등 피해가 속출했다. 대전지방기상청에 따르면 24일까지 계룡에 207㎜의 비가 내린 것을 비롯해 대전 199㎜, 천안 175㎜의 강수량을 기록했다. 대전 시내 도로 29곳이 한때 물에 잠겼고, 한밭대로와 둔산대로는 차량통행이 두 시간가량 통제되기도 했다.

서해안 지역에서는 이날 여객선 항로 6개 가운데 대천∼외연도 구간과 안흥항∼가의도 구간 2개 항로의 운항이 중단됐다.
