AWOL for 16 years, now ‘warrior’

Lee Won-chun, who deserted the Army at the age of 20 and was AWOL for more than 16 years, has been given a second chance.

And he’s making the most of it.

According to the Army on Thursday, the 37-year-old private was selected as a “special warrior” by the Ammunition Support Command, an honor given to only a handful of the best-performing soldiers within a command.

Lee is the oldest rank-and-file soldier in the service. The usual maximum age for enlisted personnel is 35.

Lee deserted the Army in 1994 due to his grief and confusion following the death of his parents in a traffic accident.

It is hard for a deserter to live a normal life in Korea because every organization is required to cooperate to find runaways.

There is no statute of limitations for the crime, which the military calls a “violation of the order.”

Lee has not publicly disclosed how he lived during his 16 years AWOL.

Lee turned himself in last November and a military court sentenced him to 24 months of military service. He started his duties Jan. 11 in the seventh ammunition depot in Chungju, North Chungcheong.

He was not much of a warrior at the start. Lee sustained a back injury from a traffic accident during his AWOL period that made it difficult for him to perform his duty, let alone shine over his younger comrades.

At the beginning, he could only do five sit-ups in two minutes and had extreme difficulty shooting rifles due to psychological instability, the military said.

But colleagues helped him and he became resolved to improve. Being named a special warrior showed how far he came.

To be named a special warrior, a soldier has to be capable of doing 72 sit-ups in two minutes, 65 pushups in two minutes and run 1.5 kilometers (0.9 miles) in five minutes, 48 seconds. He also must be able to hit a target with a bullet 18 out of 20 times.

Change did not come overnight, the military said.

“We want to shine a light on Lee’s exemplary conduct to inspire other soldiers,” said Kim Young-chul, a colonel at the command.

“We will provide Private First Class Lee with more opportunities for self-development during the rest of his military duty.”
