With IOC vote 1 week away, a final appeal

The Pyeongchang Olympic bid committee headed to Togo yesterday to make a final presentation to the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (Anoca) before the International Olympic Committee (IOC) votes on the host city of the 2018 Winter Olympics next Wednesday in Durban, South Africa.

Led by Cho Yang-ho, head of the bid committee, Pyeongchang will make its last appeal along with the two other bidding cities - Munich and Annecy, France - in front of the Anoca General Assembly in Togo today. The three cities gave their final presentations to the entire IOC last month. Pyeongchang officials said IOC members and Olympic committee representatives from all 53 African nations will be at this meeting and each city will have 20 minutes to state their case.

“The Anoca General Assembly is our last opportunity before IOC voting in Durban,” Cho said in a press release. “We will present Pyeongchang’s vision, effort and programs to [African] IOC members.”

Presenting at the Anoca General Assembly with Cho will be Korean Olympic Committee Chairman Park Yong-sung, Pyeongchang bid committee spokeswoman Teresa Rah and 21-year-old Korean figure skating star Kim Yu-na. Kim said she hopes Pyeongchang will win the bid.

“We’ve all worked hard so far and I am confident we will get a good result in the end,” Kim told Yonhap News Agency at Gimpo International Airport before departing for Togo.

The reigning Olympic figure skating champion was also a presenter at the IOC General Assembly last month, when Pyeongchang presented its bid to more than 100 IOC members.

“I have practiced [for the presentation] for a couple of weeks,” Kim said. “I did this in Lausanne and I am not as nervous now. It has become easier for me.”

Pyeongchang, which is seeking to host the nation’s first Winter Olympics, has already been defeated twice in the voting for the 2010 and 2014 Games, losing out to Vancouver, Canada, and Sochi, Russia, respectively.

To win this time, Pyeongchang has put more emphasis on becoming an Asian winter-sports hub and on its compact two-cluster venue plan that would allow athletes to move from venue to venue within 30 minutes.

Kim said the content of the presentation to the IOC voting members from Anoca will not be much different from the one at Lausanne, but this time, it will more concise.

“I want to show how I nurtured my dreams of competing at the Winter Olympics and how a Winter Games in Pyeongchang can influence young athletes,” Kim told Yonhap News Agency. “I will also emphasize that Asia hasn’t hosted the Winter Olympics for a long time and Pyeongchang is ready to stage a good Olympics for athletes.”

Kim said all three candidate cities have received positive comments from IOC members and it still is difficult to predict which city will be the chosen one in Durban next week.

“I do have a feeling that things are going our way,” Kim said. “But we have to see what happens at the end.”

평창동계올림픽 유치위, 아프리카 올림픽 총회 출발

2018 평창동계올림픽 유치위원회 선발대가 27일 출발했다. 조양호 평창 유치위원장, 피겨 여왕 김연아 등 유치위 관계자들은 27일 김포공항을 통해 아프리카 토고로 떠났다.

이들은 28일 아프리카올림픽위원회(ANOCA) 총회에 참석, 경쟁 후보도시인 독일 뮌헨과 프랑스 안시와 함께 프레젠테이션(PT)을 한다. 오는 7월 6일 남아프리카공화국 더반에서 2018년 동계올림픽 개최지를 결정하는 IOC 총회에 앞서 후보도시들이 마지막으로 PT를 하는 자리다. 조양호 위원장, 김연아 등이 프레젠터로 나서 아프리카 IOC 위원들의 표심을 잡기 위해 총력을 기울이게 된다.

조양호 유치위원장은 "IOC 총회 이전의 마지막 기회다. 동계스포츠의 확대라는 평창의 명분과 비전, 정부의 강력한 지원, 드림 프로그램 등 지난 10년 동안의 노력을 IOC 위원과 국제 스포츠계 주요 인사들에게 집중적으로 설득하겠다"고 말했다.
김연아는 "부담이 있는 게 사실이지만 그동안 잘 해왔으니 좋은 결과가 있으리라 믿는다"며 "1~2주 정도 PT 연습을 했다. 로잔에서 한 번 해봐서 긴장이 덜 된다. PT 내용도 그만큼 쉬워진 것 같다"고 웃었다. 이어 "내가 동계올림픽의 꿈을 어떻게 키웠는지, 평창 동계올림픽이 어린 선수들에게 어떤 영향을 줄 수 있는지 설명할 것이다. 아시아에서 오랫동안 동계올림픽이 열리지 않았다는 점과 선수들이 좋은 경기를 치를 환경과 시설이 마련돼 있다는 점을 부각시킬 것"이라고 설명했다.

이날 토고로 떠난 프레젠터들을 제외한 평창 유치위 본진은 7월 1일 서울에서 전세기를 타고 더반으로 떠난다. 한편 조양호 위원장 등은 토고 ANOCA 총회를 마친 후 7월1~2일 모나코에서 열리는 알베르 왕자의 결혼식에 하객으로 참석한다. 이 결혼식에 참석하는 수십 명의 IOC 위원들의 표심을 잡기 위해서다.
