Ex-national goalie says he threw games

A former national team goalkeeper has turned himself in to the nation’s top football league for his involvement in match-fixing, the league confirmed yesterday.

The goalkeeper, currently with Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors, admitted that he was engaged in match-fixing last season when he played for a different club, the Chunnam Dragons, said Ahn Gi-heon, secretary general of the K-League.

“The goalkeeper first informed his Jeonbuk head coach Choi Kang-hee last Friday night,” Ahn said. “After speaking with Lee Chul-geun, general manager of Jeonbuk, we decided to hand the case over to prosecutors.”

The goalkeeper, whose name was withheld, briefly served as a backup for the national team in 2008. He is the first known player to report himself to the K-League for match-fixing. The league declined to confirm whether there are other such players.

Players have until the end of this month to turn themselves in for more lenient penalties from the league. The K-League has said it would also ask prosecutors to reduce punishment for such players.

Prosecutors in Changwon, about 400 kilometers (249 miles) southeast of Seoul, have indicted 10 active K-League players for allegedly throwing matches in April, while one other player was indicted by military prosecutors. Ten of the 11 have received lifetime bans from the K-League.

프로축구 현역 골키퍼, 승부조작 개입 자진신고

프로축구 K리그 전남 드래곤즈에서 뛰다가 올해 전북 현대로 이적한 골키퍼 A씨가 전남 선수 시절인 지난해 승부조작에 관여했다고 한국프로축구연맹에 자진 신고했다.

안기헌 연맹 사무총장은 26일 "골키퍼 A씨가 24일 저녁 전북의 최강희 감독에게 승부조직 가담 사실을 털어놨다"며 "이철근 전북 단장과 협의해 25일 A씨를 승부조작 사건을 수사하는 창원지검에 인계했다"고 밝혔다.

2008년 1월 축구대표팀의 백업 골키퍼로 뽑히기도 했던 A씨는 지난해까지 전남에서 활약하다가 이번 시즌 전북으로 이적했다.

프로축구 승부조작 의혹을 파헤치고 있는 창원지검은 지난 9일 1차 수사 결과를 발표하고 나서 지난해 후반기의 K리그 정규리그 2경기와 컵 대회 1경기를 합쳐 3개 경기에서 승부조작이 이뤄진 혐의를 잡고 추가 수사를 벌이고 있다.

A씨는 이 과정에서 지난해 전남에서 한솥밥을 먹은 B씨가 최근 체포되자 심리적 압박감을 느끼고 자진신고한 것으로 보인다.

승부조작 파문 이후 프로축구연맹이 자진신고를 받기 시작하고 나서 자진신고 사례가 공개된 것은 A씨가 처음이다.

연맹 관계자는 "자진신고자가 더 있었는지는 수사 보안상 확인해줄 수 없다"며 "A선수는 지난해 후반기 K리그 정규리그에서 벌어진 승부조작에 관여했다는 의심을 받아왔지만 그동안 부인하다가 이번에 자진신고를 했다"고 설명했다.

프로축구연맹은 이달 말 시한으로 승부조작과 관련한 자진신고를 받고 있다.

한편 군 검찰은 승부조작 브로커로부터 한 사람당 수백만 원의 돈을 챙긴 혐의로 상주 소속 선수 3명을 지난 22일 체포했다.

또 창원지검은 승부조작에 관련된 혐의가 드러난 전남 드래곤즈와 부산 아이파크 소속 선수 1명씩과 브로커들을 추가로 체포, 축구계의 승부조작 의혹에 대한 수사를 확대하고 있다.
