Park hoping 3rd chance with Orix is best

It was Park’s second stint in the NPB minors this year, his first season in Japan.
The 38-year-old Park was demoted on May 30 after a string of horrid starts but is back in the starting rotation and is expected to pitch against the Seibu Lions tomorrow.
“Park’s ball movement has improved,” Buffaloes pitching coach Osamu Fukuma told Japanese sports daily Sports Nippon on Monday. “I think his lower body has grown stronger with some running.”
No Asian pitcher has more wins in the MLB than Park (124) but he has struggled mightily this season in Japan, having collected just one win in seven starts with a 4.29 ERA - high compared to most NPB starters who keep their ERAs in the 2.00 to 3.00 range.
But Park slowly worked his way back to respectability again and showed signs of improvement during a simulated game on Monday, when he threw four innings and allowed one run on one hit. After that, he received the green light from Orix manager Akinobu Okada.
Sports Nippon added that the former Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher was competing with Kisanuki Takashi and Nishi Yuki for the team’s last spot in the rotation but ultimately got the call from the 54-year-old manager.
Many baseball pundits still say that Park needs to be careful with his pitches. The right-hander has been relying heavily on his breaking balls this season because his fastball has lost its velocity but poor command has always been one of his problems.
It wouldn’t be a stretch to assume that this will be Park’s last chance to prove his worth. The Buffaloes took a gamble with the aging Park by signing him late last year to a one-year deal worth $1.2 million. But for the most part, it hasn’t panned out.
How Park performs in his next few starts could ultimately determine his future in Japan.
But it may be Park’s Korean teammate Lee Seung-yeop who could be even more of a concern for Orix.
The 35-year-old first baseman has led the league in strikeouts and had a batting average of less than .200 for most of the season.
Lee has revived his stroke somewhat over the last week or so, finally hitting his second and third home runs of the season - his first came on April 14.
Lee, who has the single-season Asian home run record with 56, is hitting .205 with 15 RBI, but in his last seven games the Korean has a .471 batting average with six RBI. He also had only four strikeouts in those seven games. “Lee hits ball well in the practice,” said Okada. “We will keep sending him out to play.”

코리안 듀오 박찬호·이승엽, ‘반격’ 개시
박찬호(38)가 돌아왔다. 이승엽(35)은 살아났다. 오릭스의 한국인 듀오가 반격을 시작한다.
박찬호는 28일 세이부전에 앞서 1군 엔트리에 포함됐다. 인터리그가 끝나고 선발투수 보강이 필요한 시점에서 박찬호를 불러올린 것이다. 박찬호는 30일 세이부전에 등판할 것이 유력하다.
때마침 이승엽도 상승세에 있다. 이달 초 위기에 빠졌던 그는 7연타석 삼진을 당한 뒤 오히려 페이스가 좋아졌다. 이전 7차례의 박찬호 등판 때 도움을 제대로 주지 못했지만 이번에는 다르다.
박찬호, 허벅지가 굵어졌다
박찬호는 거의 한 달만인 27일 1군 훈련에 합류했다. 오카다 아키노부 감독과 후쿠마 오사마 투수코치가 지켜보는 가운데 불펜피칭을 했다.
여기서 박찬호는 꽤 위력적인 공을 뿌렸다. 후쿠마 코치는 "공 끝이 좋아졌다. 러닝을 열심히 했는지 허벅지도 굵어졌다"며 박찬호에 대해 만족감을 드러냈다. 후쿠마 코치는 한 달 전 박찬호를 2군으로 내리면서 "더 열심히 해야 한다. 일본에 놀러온 것도 아니지 않는가"라며 독설을 했던 인물이다.
박찬호는 지난주 자체 평가전에서 4이닝 1피안타 1실점으로 좋은 피칭을 보였다. 기사누키·니시 등과의 경쟁에서 승리, 5선발 자리를 예약한 채 1군 훈련에 합류했고 이날 합격점을 받았다.
그는 올 시즌 1승 5패 평균자책점 4.29에 그쳤다. 특히 마지막 1군 등판이었던 5월 29일 주니치전에서는 3⅓이닝 동안 9피안타 6실점으로 무너져 4연패를 기록했다. 직구의 힘이 떨어지자 변화구로 견디는데 한계가 있었다.
박찬호에게는 이번이 어쩌면 마지막 기회일 수 있다. 앞으로 두세 차례 등판에서 위력적인 피칭을 보이지 못하면 기회를 다시 잡기 어렵다. 박찬호는 여전히 퍼시픽리그 최다패(7차례 등판 5패) 공동 1위다. 그를 제외하고 5패를 기록 중인 투수 3명은 모두 10차례 이상 등판했다.
이승엽, 삼진이 줄어들었다
박찬호는 사실 득점 지원을 거의 받지 못했다. 오릭스 타선이 올 시즌 초 최악의 부진에 빠졌던 탓이다. 따라서 4~5회까지 팽팽한 승부를 하다가 경기 후반 실점하는 패턴이 반복됐다.
이승엽도 박찬호의 승리에 도움이 되지 못했다. 특히 박찬호 등판 때 홈런이 하나도 없었다. 6월 초까지도 1할 대 타율에 허덕이면서 삼진은 리그 최다 수준이었다. 지난 9일 야쿠르트전부터 12일 요미우리전까지는 7연타석 삼진의 굴욕을 당했다. 성적만 보면 박찬호보다 이승엽의 자리가 더 위태로웠다.
그러나 오카다 감독은 "훈련 때 이승엽의 타구는 좋다. 계속 내보낼 것"이라고 공언했다. 실제로 이승엽은 7연타석 삼진 후 극적으로 달라졌다. 18일 주니치전에서 66일 만에 시즌 2호 홈런을 때려냈고, 한 경기를 쉰 뒤 24일 지바 롯데전에서 3호 홈런을 터뜨렸다.
이승엽은 연타석 삼진을 당한 후 7경기에서 17타수 8안타(0.471) 2홈런 6타점으로 활약했다. 이 기간 동안 삼진을 4개밖에 당하지 않았다. 타수당 삼진 비율이 39%까지 올라갔던 이전과는 확실히 달라진 모습이다. 오카다 감독은 "이승엽이 좋은 느낌으로 타격하고 있다"며 만족감을 보였다.
이승엽은 이제서야 조금 여유를 찾았다. 6번 타순에서 다시 자리를 잡은 이승엽이 이제 박찬호를 도울 차례다.
