A bad day for top women

LONDON - Walking away from Centre Court, Oracene Price - mother and sometimes-coach to Serena and Venus Williams - shook her head after watching one daughter after another lose at Wimbledon.

Undeniably great as she is, even defending champion Serena found it too tough to make a deep run at her first Grand Slam tournament in a year after a series of health scares. And as successful as Venus has been at the All England Club, even she couldn’t muster her best after missing nearly five months with a hip injury.

“I don’t think their layoffs helped their rhythm,’’ Price said. “They both seemed to be making the same kinds of mistakes. They were hit-and-miss, here and there.’’

They’re both headed home after straight-set exits in the fourth round against far-less-accomplished opponents Monday. First, 13-time major champion Serena lost 6-3, 7-6 (6) to ninth-seeded Marion Bartoli on No. 1 Court. Then, less than two hours later and before a Centre Court crowd that included Prince William and his new bride Kate, five-time Wimbledon champion Venus was beaten 6-2, 6-3 by 32nd-seeded Tsvetana Pironkova.

Adding to the chaotic nature of the afternoon, top-seeded Caroline Wozniacki lost, too, although she’s still searching for her first Grand Slam singles trophy, whereas the Williams sisters own a total of 20.

“Definitely not our best day,’’ Venus said. “I think we both envisioned seeing this day going a little bit different.’’

And why shouldn’t they have? After all, Venus and her younger sister combined to win nine of the past 11 Wimbledon titles, including Serena’s victories in 2009 and 2010. They even played each other in four of the finals in that span.

“Well, I never came here thinking I would lose,’’ said Serena, a former No. 1 whose ranking now will plummet to about 175th. “That’s my attitude.’’

It’s the first time since 2006 that neither Williams is in the Wimbledon quarterfinals; Venus lost in the third round that year, while Serena skipped the tournament because of a left knee injury. Of the 12 years that both entered the field at the All England Club, this is the first neither one made it past the fourth round.

“Obviously, it’s not something planned,’’ Venus said. “We rarely lose on the same day.’’

All in all, it was a topsy-turvy day at the All England Club as Wozniacki - still yet to make it past the fourth round at Wimbledon - lost to No. 24 Dominika Cibulkova 1-6, 7-6 (5), 7-5.

They won’t be around for the women’s quarterfinals Tuesday, which are: Cibulkova vs. No. 5 Maria Sharapova of Russia; Bartoli vs. wild-card entry Sabine Lisicki; No. 8 Petra Kvitova vs. Pironkova; and No. 4 Victoria Azarenka vs. Tamira Paszek. It’s the first time since 1913 that the last eight women at Wimbledon are from Europe - and, as it happens, eight countries are represented.

윌리엄스 자매 동반 탈락

윔블던 테니스대회에서 절대 강세를 보여온 윌리엄스 자매(미국)가 나란히 단식 8강 진출에 실패했다.

3년 연속 우승에 도전했던 동생 서리나(25위)가 27일(현지시간) 마리온 바톨리(9위·프랑스)와의 16강전에서 0-2(3-6 6<6>-7)로 졌다.

이어 6번째 우승을 노렸던 언니 비너스(30위)도 츠베타나 피론코바(33위·불가리아)에게 0-2(2-6 3-6)로 패했다.

2001년부터 최근 10년간 윌리엄스 자매 외에 윔블던 단식 우승을 한 선수는 2004년 마리아 샤라포바(러시아), 2006년 아밀리 모레스모(프랑스)뿐이다.

비너스는 "우리 둘 다 컨디션이 좋지 못했다"고 말했고, 서리나는 "윔블던에 나오면서 질 것이라고 생각한 적이 없었다"며 아쉬워했다.

윌리엄스 자매가 함께 출전해 16강에서 탈락한 것은 이번이 처음이다.

=시불코바, 세계 1위 워즈니아키 제압 파란

0...도미니카 시불코바(24위·슬로바키아)가 세계 1위인 캐롤라인 워즈니아키(덴마크)를 꺾는 파란을 일으켰다.

시불코바는 지금까지 메이저대회에서 세계 랭킹 10위 이내 선수를 만나 8전 전패를 당했다.

게다가 한 세트도 빼앗은 적이 없었던 시불코바는 이날 워즈니아키에게도 1세트를 1-6으로 내줘 패색이 짙어지는 듯했다.

그러나 2세트를 타이브레이크 끝에 따내며 상승세를 탄 시불코바는 3세트 초반 게임스코어 0-2의 열세를 뒤집고 7-5로 승리했다.

세계 1위지만 아직 메이저대회에서 우승하지 못한 워즈니아키는 또 다음 대회를 기약하게 됐다.

=유럽 선수, 여자단식 8강 '점령'

0...이번 대회 여자단식 8강에는 유럽 선수들만 진출했다.

8강 대진은 시불코바-마리아 샤라포바(6위·러시아), 자비네 리지키(62위·독일)-바톨리, 타미라 파세크(80위·오스트리아)-빅토리아 아자렌카(5위·벨라루스), 페트라 크비토바(9위·체코)-피론코바의 대결로 짜였다.

유럽 선수들로만 윔블던 여자단식 8강이 채워진 것은 1913년 이후 98년 만이다.

또 메이저대회에서 여자단식 8강 진출 선수들의 국적이 모두 다른 것은 1992년과 1994년, 2010년 US오픈, 올해 호주오픈에 이어 다섯 번째다.
