Korea U. teams up with Army for cyberdefense

South Korea is planning to build a cyberarmy to fend off virtual attacks from North Korea, which is said to have thousands of people working on infiltrating firewalls and wreaking havoc online.

Korea University in Seoul and the South Korean Army signed an agreement yesterday to add a new major at the school for cyberdefense, said the Army yesterday.

The university, which is often named one of the top three universities in the nation, has agreed to cooperate with the South Korean military to create a group of experts specializing in cyberwar. A cyberdefense major will be added at Korea University’s Graduate School of Information Security starting next year with a class of 30 students.

Those who choose the major will be provided with four-year scholarships from the Army and after graduation, they will be installed in the military as officers. Once they take their positions in the military, the new cyberdefense group will be deployed in various departments for seven years.

Students will be familiarized with IT technology, breaking codes and cyberpsychology to help them on their future tasks for cyberdefense. They will also be versed in military education as well for their Army positions.

Such a move by a university or the military is unprecedented, observers say. Kim Sang-ki, Army Chief of Staff, said he was “relieved” that manpower for cyberdefense would be developed at the university.

The South Korean military has blamed North Korea for recent cyberattacks, including GPS jamming and the hacking of Nonghyup Bank’s server.

사이버 전문장교 양성학과 민간대학에 개설

육군ㆍ고려대 ‘사이버국방학과’ 개설 협약

사이버 전문장교 양성 학과가 처음으로 민간대학에 개설된다.

육군은 28일 오전 육군본부에서 고려대와 사이버국방학과 개설 및 운영에 관한 학ㆍ군 제휴 협약을 체결했다고 밝혔다.

사이버 테러 위협이 급증하는 가운데 이에 능동적으로 대응할 전문인력 확보를 위한 조치다.

이에 따라 고려대는 정보보호대학원에 사이버 국방학과를 신설, 내년 신입생 30명을 선발해 4년간 양성한다. 육군은 이들 전원을 군장학생으로 임명해 4년간 전액 장학금을 지급한다.

사이버국방학과는 정보기술(IT)과 암호해독 이론과 실습, 사이버 심리 등 사이버전 수행시 필요한 전문과목을 집중적으로 교육하고 장교 임관에 필요한 군사학도 가르칠 예정이다.

학과 학생들은 방학 중 관련부대에서 현장실습을 하고 졸업 후에는 모두 학사장교(정보통신 병과)로 임관해 7년간 사이버전 관련 부서에서 근무하게 된다.

협약식에서 김상기 육군 참모총장은 "군에서 필요한 능력 있는 사이버전사를 배출할 수 있게 돼 매우 다행스럽다"고 말했고 김병철 고려대 총장은 "국가안보에 기여할 우수한 학생을 선발해 교육할 수 있어 매우 기쁘게 생각한다"고 답했다.
