A ‘million yard’ Korea-Japan golf rivalry

Yang Yong-eun and nine other professional golfers from Korea will team up to square off against Japan at the 2011 Million Yard Cup, which kicks off today and ends Sunday at Jeongsan Country Club in Gimhae, South Gyeongsang.

The event, which was previously called the Korea-Japan Professional Golf Team Match, changed its name to the Million Yard Cup this year to build a brand name on par with prestigious international golf competitions like the Presidents Cup and the Ryder Cup.

The name “Million Yard” derives from the distance between Korea and Japan, which is thought to average about 950 kilometers (590 miles), or about a million yards. A comparable distance between major cities in the two countries is Busan to Tokyo.

Co-hosted by the Korean Golf Tour (KGT) and the Japan Golf Tour Organization (JGTO), and sponsored by KB Financial Group, the event organizers said that this year’s $200,000 purse will be donated in the winning team’s name to earthquake and tsunami relief efforts in Japan.

This is the third time the two East Asian countries have faced off on the fairways. In their first meeting in 2004, Korea won thanks to a long sudden-death birdie putt by Yang.

But the event was put on hold for five years due scheduling conflicts on both sides and was finally resumed last year at the Haevichi Country Club in Seogwipo, Jeju. And it was Japan that narrowly edged Korea last year.

This time, however, Korea is looking to take the series lead.

The 39-year-old Yang, known as Y.E. Yang in the U.S., has returned to the 10-man Korean roster after missing the second tournament last year and is ready to bring the title back to his home country.

“When I heard Korea lost to Japan last year, I felt somewhat angry and sorry for the Korean golfers,” Yang told the JoongAng Ilbo. “I want to help Korea when I’m at full condition.”

And it could be said that Yang is in such a condition. The first Asian to win a major title - the 2009 PGA Championship - tied for third in the U.S. Open at 6-under par and would have won most years with that score, if not for a historic performance by young Rory McIlroy, who shot 16 under. But the veteran Korean emphasized teamwork more than individual achievement for this three-day tournament.

“When playing on a team, you need to put your best effort to make good shots,” Yang said. “The Korea-Japan competition is something special and you need to be focused until the last shot.”

Yang is paired in the first round with Kim Kyung-tae, the top money earner in the JGTO last year. Yang and Kim, 25, will play against Shingo Katayama and Yuta Ikeda.

“Japanese golfers play very smart and elaborate golf,” Yang said. “They are not easy opponents, but I believe Korea will win this year.”

The event organizers said that the format of this year’s event is not much different than last year.

On the first day, the golfers will play foursome stroke play, in which the pair on both sides take turns hitting their ball. The following day will see players in a four-ball match, while the final day will see Koreans and Japanese play one-on-one in single matches.
