Argentina expects Messi to deliver big

BUENOS AIRES - Hosts Argentina feel it is their “obligation” to win the Copa America with a team built around Lionel Messi, and cannot stomach the idea of finishing behind archrival Brazil for the third time in a row. The old enemies met in the last two finals of South America’s top football tournament, with Brazil upsetting the favorites twice, but with home advantage at the July 1-24 event, Argentina hopes to win the trophy for the first time since 1993.

While Argentina has Messi, fast emerging as Diego Maradona’s heir, at the heart of their attack, Brazil has its own brilliant player in Neymar, a potential new Pele who has already helped Santos win the Libertadores Cup at 19.

“It is our obligation to win the tournament,” said Argentina coach Sergio Batista, who plays Messi in a roving center forward role akin to his flexible position at Barcelona.

Argentina open the world’s oldest active major football tournament at the modern, roofed Ciudad de La Plata stadium on Friday when they take on Bolivia in Group A.

They have a score to settle, having been thrashed 6-1 the last time they met in a World Cup qualifier at high altitude in La Paz two years ago during Maradona’s time as coach.

An attack boasting Messi, Carlos Tevez and Ezequiel Lavezzi, with Gonzalo Higuain, Sergio Aguero and Angel di Maria on the bench, should have little trouble brushing aside the Bolivians in a relatively easy group for the hosts.

Brazil, with coach Mano Menezes going back to the basics of his country’s “beautiful game,” kicks off against Venezuela in Group B at the same venue on Sunday before playing Paraguay and Ecuador.

Menezes’ pair of aces are Neymar and his 21-year-old Santos teammate Paulo Henrique Ganso, an exquisite playmaker the coach hopes will spark Robinho, a veteran of Brazil’s 2007 victory, and Alexandre Pato up front.

Uruguay comes to the tournament on the back of its fourth-place finish at the World Cup and with hardly any changes in personnel or style but with a fresher 32-year-old Diego Forlan after a tough season in Spain, that included an alarming loss of form.

“There is a very strong [team] base around Diego Forlan [and] he is in very good physical condition [after a refreshing break],” said coach Oscar Tabarez, one of the few coaches to survive a post-World Cup cull.

Chile and Paraguay, who had good World Cups last year, especially the latter with its finish in the last eight for the first time, will be tough opponents.

Colombia is a dark horse, with an attack boasting Radamel Falcao Garcia, whose top-scoring exploits helped Porto win the Portuguese championship and Europa League.

“I think Colombia will have a good Copa America, a goodWorld Cup qualifying campaign and qualify for the finals,” Paraguay coach Gerardo Martino said.

펠레가 미는 네이마르 vs 마라도나가 믿는 메시

황제와 천재는 그라운드에 함께 서지 못했다. 펠레와 마라도나 이야기다. 두 선수는 활동 시기가 달랐다. 펠레는 1960년대 전성기를 누렸고, 마라도나는 80년대 중반을 풍미했다. 이제 황제는 어느덧 70대 노신사로, 천재는 50대 중년으로 변했다. 축구화를 다시 신기에는 너무 늦었다. 그러나 너무 아쉬워할 필요는 없을 것 같다. 대신 그들을 쏙 빼닮은 두 선수가 한 대회에서 자존심 대결을 펼치기 때문이다.

1일(한국시간) 아르헨티나에서 코파 아메리카컵 대회가 개막한다. 4년마다 열리는 남미축구대항전이다. 남미 10개국과 초청 2개국이 25일까지 조별예선과 결선 토너먼트를 거쳐 우승팀을 가린다. 가장 강력한 우승 후보는 브라질과 아르헨티나. 축구 황제와 천재를 배출한 두 나라의 우승 경쟁이 관전 포인트다.

브라질은 대표팀 공격수인 네이마르 다 시우바(19)에게 기대를 걸고 있다. 이 19살의 소년에게서는 펠레의 모습이 짙게 비친다. 그는 브라질리안 특유의 골 감각과 유연성을 갖췄다. 어린 나이에도 불구하고 화려한 발재간과 침착함까지 갖췄다. 펠레가 현역 시절 활동했던 산투스에서 선수 생활을 하고 있으니 자연스레 별명은 ‘제2의 펠레’다.

네이마르는 지난해 8월 미국과의 친선경기에서 A매치 데뷔 골을 터트렸다. 지난 3월 말 스코틀랜드와의 친선경기에서는 2골을 몰아넣었다. 남미 20세 이하(U-20) 선수권 대회에서는 9골을 터트려 브라질을 정상에 올려놓으며 득점상과 최우수선수상(MVP)까지 거머쥐었다. 리그에서는 소속팀 산투스의 상파울루주 챔피언십과 브라질 컵대회에서 우승을 이끌었다.

유럽 빅클럽도 네이마르를 주목하고 있다. 잉글랜드 프리미어리그의 첼시와 스페인 프리메라리가의 레알 마드리드 등이 그에게 관심을 보여왔다. 현 소속 팀인 산토스의 루이스 알파로 리베이로 사장은 “네이마르의 바이아웃 금액은 4500만 유로(약 700억원)”라고 공언했다.

아르헨티나를 이끄는 선수는 리오넬 메시(24)다. 네이마르가 펠레의 아바타라면 메시는 마라도나의 재림이다. 그는 축구의 역사를 새로 쓰고 있다. 국제축구연맹(FIFA) 올해의 선수상을 2연패했고, 프로 최고의 무대인 유럽챔피언스리그에서도 두 차례나 정상에 섰다. 20세 이하 월드컵과 베이징 올림픽도 제패했다. 그러나 그에게도 약점이 있다. 국가대표로서는 메시다운 모습을 보여주지 못한다는 것이다. 2010년 남아공 월드컵에서 메시는 1골도 넣지 못했다. 아르헨티나도 8강에서 탈락했다. 특히 뼈아픈 것은 2007년 브라질과의 코파 아메리카컵 결승전. 그는 이렇다 할 활약을 펼치지 못했다. 팀은 0-3으로 완패했다.

따라서 이번 대회에 임하는 메시의 각오는 비장하다. 그는 축구 선수로서 이룰 수 있는 목표는 거의 다 이뤘다. 마라도나처럼 아르헨티나 대표팀을 우승으로 이끄는 일만 남았다. 메시는 “코파아메리카 우승은 나의 가장 큰 꿈”이라고 말한다. “바르셀로나에선 참가한 모든 대회에서 우승을 경험했다. 이제 이러한 성공을 대표팀에서 이어가고 싶다”는 이유에서다.

‘제2의 펠레’ 네이마르와 ‘마라도나의 재림’ 메시의 맞대결은 가능할까. 브라질과 아르헨티나는 다른 조에 속해 있다. 두 선수의 맞대결은 결승에서나 가능하다. 그러나 펠레와 마라도나는 이미 언론을 통해 전초전을 치렀다. 펠레는 얼마 전 브라질 라디오와의 인터뷰에서 “네이마르가 메시를 능가하는 선수가 될 것”이라고 공언했다. 그러면서 “메시처럼 국가대표에서 약한 선수가 되지 않길 바란다”고 말했다. 네이마르에게 애정 어린 충고를 하면서 메시를 자극한 것이다. 이에 맞서 마라도나는 “펠레는 교양이 없다”며 “네이마르가 메시를 능가할 수 있을지 의문”이라고 반박했다.
