TV reporter arrested for bribery in Busan case

Prosecutors probing the massive scandal of the Busan Savings Bank Group arrested a reporter working for a broadcasting company in Yeosu, South Jeolla, on suspicion of receiving bribes from the group, the Central Investigation Unit of the Supreme Prosecutors’ Office said yesterday.

According to the prosecutors’ office, officials obtained evidence that the reporter surnamed Yang allegedly received bribes in exchange for helping the debt-ridden group receive the local government’s approval for building apartments in Suncheon, South Jeolla.

Prosecutors presume Yang, who had lots of contacts with local government officials in the South Jeolla region by working as reporter, was a “bridge” between the group and the officials.

After being arrested on his way to work Tuesday, Yang was taken to the Central Investigation Unit in Seoul.

According to prosecutors, the Busan Savings Bank Group launched the apartment project in 2000 and invested at least 55 billion won ($51 million) in the project.

The project has been suspended since the group shut down its five banks in February.

Prosecutors suspect the group lobbied high-ranking local government officials in Suncheon. They are expanding the probe to other local officials in the region.

중수부, 저축銀 비리 방송사 기자 체포

순천 왕지동 아파트사업 로비 의혹

저축은행 비리 사건을 수사 중인 대검찰청 중앙수수사부(김홍일 검사장)는 부산저축은행그룹이 추진한 전남 순천 왕지동 아파트 사업과 관련, 모 방송 지방사 양모 기자를 체포해 조사하고 있는 것으로 30일 알려졌다.

검찰은 전날 오전 출근하던 양씨를 현지에서 체포해 서울 중수부 사무실로 압송한 것으로 전해졌다.

검찰은 양씨가 왕지동 아파트 사업과 관련한 인허가 및 사업편의 청탁과 함께 금품을 받은 정황을 포착, 사실 관계를 확인 중인 것으로 알려졌다.

검찰은 양씨가 평소 지자체 고위 공무원과의 친분을 활용해 부산저축은행그룹에 다리를 놓아주는 역할을 한 것으로 보고 있다.

부산저축은행그룹은 2000년대 초반부터 순천 왕지동 아파트 사업에 ㈜낙원주택건설을 비롯한 3개 특수목적법인(SPC)을 동원해 총 550억원 이상을 투자했으나 현재 사업이 중단된 상태다.

검찰은 부산저축은행그룹이 이 사업을 추진하는 과정에서 인허가와 사업 편의를 위해 지역 정관계와 지자체 인사를 상대로 광범위한 로비를 벌인 것으로 보고 수사를 확대하고 있다.

검찰은 지난 9일 왕지동 아파트 사업을 맡아 추진하면서 인허가 청탁을 위한 활동비 명목으로 부산저축은행에서 3억원을 받아챙긴 혐의로 낙원주택건설 대표 임모씨에 대해 구속영장을 청구했으나 기각됐다.

또 지난 15일 낙원주택건설과 고문계약을 체결한 순천지역 서모 변호사의 사무실을 압수수색하기도 했다.
