Five attempt suicide in jump off bridge; 1 saved

A group of five men and women in their late 20s and early 30s jumped off a bridge into the North Han River in Gapyeong, Gyeonggi, yesterday, after failing their first suicide attempt of taking sleeping pills while intoxicated, according to Gapyeong police.

A 25-year-old female surnamed Chang was found unconscious floating in the river at about 6:30 a.m. by a staff member of a nearby boatyard, while police continued searching for the other four.

According to police, a group of five - three males and two females - jumped off the Shincheongpyeong Bridge yesterday around 5:30 a.m. near a boatyard by the North Han River. Chang told the police that the five jumped off the bridge and that they met through an online suicide site. However, police said that Chang was giving incoherent answers upon police questioning.

According to the police, the group got together around 8 p.m. Saturday and checked in at a holiday house in Gapyeong, where they committed their first suicide attempt by sharing three bottles of soju and taking sleeping pills to fall asleep in a closed room with a burning briquette they prepared in advance. But when their plan failed, they went to the bridge and jumped off together, police said.

Chang was only able to identify two males among the missing four, both surnamed Yoo, aged 31 and 29.

Police and rescue teams were immediately dispatched to search for the missing four after the one woman was discovered, but the swollen waters of the North Han River due to recent heavy downpours made the search difficult, according to the police.

“We assume that they met at a suicide site on the Internet and attempted a group suicide,” said Lee Young-soo, chief of the investigation unit at the Gapyeong Police station. “We are looking for witnesses and will investigate further by questioning Chang as soon as she regains full consciousness.”

남녀 5명이 북한강에 동반 투신해 경찰과 119구조대가 수색작업을 벌이고 있다.

　3일 경기도 가평경찰서에 따르면 이날 오전 6시20분쯤 가평군 청평면 북한강변 수상 레저용 보트장 인근에서 장모(25·여)씨가 정신을 잃은 채 물에 떠 있는 것을 수상레저업체 직원이 구조했다. 장씨는 경찰에서 이날 오전 5시30분쯤 신청평대교에서 남성 3명, 여성 1명과 함께 북한강으로 뛰어내렸다고 말했다. 이들은 서로 모르는 사이로 인터넷 자살사이트에서 만나 함께 자살을 시도한 것으로 추정된다. 조사 결과 이들은 전날 오후 8시쯤 가평의 한 펜션에 함께 투숙해 소주 3병과 수면제를 나눠 먹은 뒤 번개탄을 피워놓고 자살을 시도하다 실패한 것으로 알려졌다. 장씨는 생명에는 지장이 없으나 수면제를 복용한 상태여서 조사가 어려운 상황이다.

　경찰과 119구조대는 민간 잠수협회 회원들과 함께 이 일대에 대한 수색 작업을 벌이고 있다. 그러나 폭우로 북한강 물이 불어난 데다 유속이 빨라 수색에 어려움을 겪고 있다. 장씨 등이 함께 타고 온 것으로 보이는 차량은 신청평대교에서 발견됐다.

　가평경찰서 이영수 수사과장은 “이들이 인터넷 자살사이트 등을 통해 만나 함께 자살을 시도한 것으로 추정된다”며 “신청평대교 인근에서 목격자를 찾는 한편 장씨가 정신을 차리는 대로 정확한 경위를 조사하겠다”고 말했다.
