PARIS - Chung Myung-whun, a world-renowned Korean conductor, will receive a top French cultural order this week in recognition of his contributions to music, the French government said Tuesday.

Chung has been named “Commander of the Order of Arts and Letters,” the highest honor awarded to an artist by the French government, the French Ministry of Culture and Communication said.

Among other honorees is Russian pianist Evgeny Kissin.

The awards ceremony is set to be held at the French ministry on Wednesday.

Chung, the music director and chief conductor of the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, expressed his gratitude to the French government through the SPO, saying he was honored to receive the award.

“France is like my second home, and it’s already been 30 years since I first arrived in the country,” he said. “I started opera in Paris in my youth and am now in charge of the Radio France Philharmonic Orchestra. I found something strangely in common with French musicians and received a lot of love from the audiences.”

“I hope France and South Korea will grow even closer as a family,” he added.

The conductor, who doubles as music director of the Radio France Philharmonic Orchestra, will work as the principal guest conductor for the Staatskapelle Dresden, one of Germany’s top ensembles, from next year.

He is the second Korean to receive the French cultural order this year.

In April, Yoon Jeong-hee, the star of the award-winning Korean film “Poetry,” received the order for her contributions to film.

She was named “Officer of the Order of Arts and Letters,” the second-highest cultural honor awarded by the French government, joining her husband, pianist Paik Kun-woo, as an honoree of the French order. The classical pianist received his honor in 2001.
