New leadership at classical festival

The eighth edition of the Great Mountains (Daegwallyeong) International Music Festival and School kicks off on July 24 with renewed leadership.

Starting this year, cellist Chung Myung-wha, 67, and violinist Chung Kyung-wha, 63, will co-direct the festival, replacing violinist and Yale professor Kang Hyo, who had been at the helm of the festival since its inception.

The sisters are members of the world-renowned Chung Trio, which also includes their younger brother, Chung Myung-whun, pianist and conductor the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra.

The trio has rarely performed since the mid-1990s but festivalgoers will have a chance to see the sisters perform together for the first time in six years at the festival, which is from July 24 until Aug. 13 at the scenic Alpensia Resort in Pyeongchang, Gangwon, a possible venue for the 2018 Winter Olympics.

The Chung sisters will be accompanied by American concert pianist Kevin Kenner in a performance of Brahms’ Piano Trio, Op. 8, in B.

The theme of the festival, which is modeled after the Aspen Music Festival in the United States, is “illumination,” which aims to accent “both the wisdom of experience and the indescribable beauty found in the timeless works of music” in the festival, Chung Kyung-wha said at a press conference last Tuesday. The Juilliard professor returned to the stage last year after a five-year absence resulting from a finger injury.

Citing musical geniuses who led short lives, such as Mozart, Mendelssohn, Chopin and Schubert, she noted that there is an “abiding sense of uplift from these composers who were grappling with illness and limits of life.”

In line with the festival’s theme, the July 30 concert will be solely devoted to Mozart. It features his Piano Concerto No. 23 in A and Requiem Mass in D minor.

The festival also offers its Distinguished Artists Series, a series of nine chamber concerts by professional musicians and members of the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra to be held from July 28 till Aug. 7 at the resort’s concert hall. The series will be broadcast live and presented on an outdoor screen at the newly opened floating islands on the Han River in Seoul for music lovers who cannot go to Gangwon for the festival.

Notable musicians who are scheduled to perform include: pianist Son Yeol-eum, winner of the second prize at last week’s 14th International Tchaikovsky Competition; Taiwanese-American violin prodigy Chun-Wen Huang; and Grammy Award-winning clarinetist Richard Stoltzman. Some of these musicians will also hold free concerts at venues ranging from local culture halls to Woljeong Buddhist Temple.

“One of the most important elements to making this festival more successful is visitors’ comfort,” Chung Myung-wha said. “Families are supposed to relax, eat well and do various activities in addition to listening to music. That’s common at other globally renowned music festivals - Aspen in the United States, Verbier in Switzerland and Spleto in Italy. We intend to close the gap with those.”

The festival also serves as a place for music students from elementary school to university to hone their skills through master classes from top-notch musicians and university faculty members from around the world.

한 무대 서는 정명화·경화 “7년 만이네요”
내달 개막 대관령음악제서 호흡

1960년대 초반 미국 뉴욕 한 켠의 작은 아파트. 방 두 개가 빠듯이 들어있던 이 곳에 네 살 터울의 자매가 살았다. 첼리스트 정명화(67), 바이올리니스트 정경화(63)씨다. 집에 손님이라도 오면 연습할 곳이 없었다. 동생 경화는 바이올린을 들고 화장실로 들어가 밤새 연습을 했다. 남동생 피아니스트 정명훈(58)과 함께하는 ‘정트리오 신화’가 시작된 곳이다.

　1980년대 이후 정트리오의 활동은 눈부셨다. 내로라하는 오케스트라와 함께 세계를 누볐고, 거대 음반사에서 앨범을 냈다.

　이들의 마지막 무대는 2004년이었다. 어머니 이원숙 여사의 생일을 축하하기 위한 서울 공연이었다. 음악 팬들은 정트리오 재결합이란 ‘사건’을 기다렸지만 쉽지 않았다. 정경화씨는 손가락 부상으로 5년간 무대를 떠나 있었다. 어머니는 지난달 세상을 떠났다.

　정명화·경화 자매가 다음 달 29일 한 무대에 선다. 7년 만의 자리다. 둘이 공동 예술감독을 맡고 있는 제 8회 대관령 국제음악제에서다. 지휘 활동으로 바쁜 정명훈씨 대신 쇼팽 콩쿠르 입상 경력의 피아니스트 케빈 케너와 함께다.

　28일 만난 둘은 “서로를 믿기 때문에 이번 무대도 든든하다”고 했다. 같은 음악을 수십 년 해온 이들은 자매 이상이었다. 사랑으로 엮인 동료에 가까웠다.

　오랜만에 돌아온 경화씨가 입을 떼었다. “정말이지 연주하고 싶어요. 아파서 쉬는 동안 많은 경험을 했지만 이젠 연주하고 싶어졌어요. 그리고 언니가 아니었으면 실내악 무대는 불가능했겠죠.”

　‘동양의 마녀’로 불리던 바이올리니스트는 “일주일에 세 번씩 연주를 하던 시절엔 딱 반나절만 휴가가 있으면 좋겠다고 생각했어요”라고 했다. 악기를 놓고 그는 인생을 얻었다 했다. 연주가 줄을 이을 땐 할 수 없었던 ‘평범한 생활’을 했기 때문이다.

　명화씨가 말을 이었다. “보통 연주자 같으면 절망하고 힘들어했을 수 있는 일이었는데, 우리 가족은 워낙 긍정적이고 할 수 있다는 에너지가 넘치니까요. 또 형제들은 얼마나 서로에게 의지하는지 몰라요. 그 어떤 일이 일어나도 서로 돕는 덕분에 다 이겨냈지요.”

　자매는 지난해까지 7년간 바이올리니스트 강효씨가 맡아왔던 대관령 국제 음악제의 바통을 넘겨 받았다. 그들은 서로의 안목을 믿었다. “경화는 뉴욕에, 전 서울에 있지만 매일 통화하는 사이에요. 음악뿐 아니라 인생을 의논하는 사이기 때문에 그 어떤 생각을 해도 다 이해하고 소통하죠.”(명화)

　자매의 성격은 악기를 따라 닮았다. 언니는 사려가 깊고, 동생은 예민하다. 서로를 보완하며 돕는다. 이번 축제를 기획하며 좋은 연주자·곡목·주제 등을 정하는 데에 이만한 파트너가 없었다. 세계적 음악 페스티벌에 참가해본 서로의 경험 또한 든든했다.

　명화씨는 “세계 일류 음악제를 한국에 하나 만들려면 수많은 사람의 엄청난 노력이 필요하죠. 재정 지원도 물론이고요”라고 말했다. ‘세계적 한국 오케스트라 하나를 만든다’는 목표로 활동하고 있는 명훈씨의 말과 닮았다. 어린 시절 한국을 떠나 세계를 무대로 활동했지만 ‘정트리오’는 결국 한국으로 돌아오고 있다.

　경화씨는 “한국에서 너무나 많은 것을 받았어요. 이제 돌려줄 시간이란 데에 우리 모두 동감하고 있죠. 대관령 국제음악제도 그 중 하나에요”라고 했다. 비록 ‘정트리오’ 중 한 명은 이번 무대에서 빠졌지만, 셋은 이미 역할을 다 하고 있는 듯하다.
