Adoptee to speak for Pyeongchang

With little more than a day left until the host city of the 2018 Winter Olympics is announced, the Pyeongchang bid committee - and the other two cities bidding for the Games, Munich and Annecy, France - has brought the biggest names it could gather to present to the International Olympic Committee General Assembly in Durban, South Africa, tomorrow, before the vote.

After all, Korean President Lee Myung-bak and even Korean figure skating star Kim Yu-na will speak.

But Pyeongchang has an ace up its sleeve and has already announced it would use it.

The bid committee said on Sunday that Toby Dawson, a Korean adoptee and Olympic skier for the United States who wasn’t previously mentioned as a possible speaker, will be one of the presenters in Durban.

The three-time World Ski Championships medalist said he was first asked to speak on Pyeongchang’s behalf in May.

“Pyeongchang asked me to come here because of my love for the Olympics,” Dawson said during a press conference on Sunday. “I can’t wait to be in front of IOC members.”

Dawson also said he supports Pyeongchang because he thinks it is the perfect place to host the Winter Olympics.

Pyeongchang, a small city in the mountains of Gangwon, has been emphasizing its plan to step up as an Asian winter sports hub and the close proximity among venues.

This is the third time the city has bid for the Olympics after losing to Vancouver, Canada, for the 2010 Games and Sochi, Russia, for the 2014 Games.

Dawson was adopted to a Colorado family when he was 3-years-old. He won a bronze medal for the U.S. in the mogul competition at the 2006 Winter Games in Turin and met his biological parents in Korea shortly after.

Dawson’s story was made into a documentary titled “Toby Dawson - Lost and Found” and aired across the U.S. in April.

Said Vice Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Park Sun-kyoo: “There are not many people who have a story like Toby’s to share.”
