Cisco to put $47M in Songdo project

Cisco Systems, a leading multinational network provider, will invest $47 million in a project to develop the Songdo International Business District into a smart city operating with cutting-edge technology.

According to the Incheon city government, the company based in California signed two investment contracts yesterday with the New Songdo International City Development (NSIC), a joint venture company of Posco E&C and the Gale Company. It also agreed to launch its global center in the Northeast Asia Trade Tower in Songdo District and establish a series of joint projects with the government.

“Cisco is extremely excited to take another important step forward with this bold, innovative project in the Songdo International Business District,” said Wim Elfrink, chief globalization officer of Cisco.

“This is what we envisioned when we created the ‘Smart+Connected Communities’ blueprint. We are confident that the ecosystem of companies that are involved here - Cisco, Gale, LG CNS and Posco, in a close relationship with the Incheon government, will achieve our goals.”

Cisco’s goal is to help develop a “smart house” where all electricity, including boilers, gas, curtains and other home facilities, are perfectly remote-controlled by residents’ smartphones - even if they are outside the home.

Video conference facilities will be installed in all houses and public organizations in the Songdo area, Cisco said, to enable residents to videophone with schools, hospitals and banks in the region. To do this, Cisco will gradually install more than 10,000 pieces of equipment for video calls in the Songdo region over the next seven years.

If the company succeeds in this smart city project, it will export the system to other countries, Cisco said.

Stan Gale, chairman of NSIC, said, “With this announcement, NSIC will gain further momentum attracting foreign capital. And our partnership with Cisco will contribute to realizing a true smart life for residents and workers in Songdo District.”

Incheon Mayor Song Young-gil expressed his delight with the arrangement. “Cisco’s role for implementing our vision to develop the Incheon Free Economic Zone will be a model for other countries trying to invest in the Songdo area,” he said.
