Gen. Sharp becomes honorary Seoulite

Gen. Walter Sharp, commander of United States Forces Korea, became an honorary citizen of Seoul yesterday, Seoul city government said.

Mayor Oh Se-hoon conferred the honorary citizenship to Sharp, praising his contribution to strengthening bilateral relations not only between the U.S. and South Korean governments but also between the U.S. army in Korea and Korean citizens.

“Since I heard the commander’s father once fought for the Korean War, I have felt he has special connection with Korea,” Oh said in a statement. “But now we are all sorry that he’s leaving Korea soon. We won’t forget his love and efforts to Korea during his term.”

Sharp first served in Korea from 1996 to 1998 and was appointed the top U.S. military commander of the USFK in 2008, leading nearly 28,500 U.S. troops in South Korea. He wraps up his 37-year-old military career on July 14.

Parts of the USFK’s Good Neighbor campaign aimed to maintain good relationships with Korean citizens. The commander launched an English camp program in May, dubbed Good English Camp, inviting 65 Korean high school students to the USFK’s military bases and U.S. soldiers’ houses in Korea.

Sharp was the 650th expatriate to become an honorary citizen.

샤프 한미연합사령관 '서울 명예시민'
월터 샤프 한미연합사령관이 서울시 명예시민이 됐다.

서울시는 한미 동맹을 강화하고 한국의 방위 능력을 높이는 데 기여한 공로로 샤프 사령관을 명예시민으로 위촉했다고 4일 밝혔다.

서울시는 "샤프 사령관은 한국 고교생을 미군 시설과 가정에 초청해 영어를 가르치는 '좋은이웃 영어캠프' 사업을 추진하는 등 주한 미군과 지역사회 주민과의 상호 교류를 위해 힘써 왔다"고 평가했다.

미국 육군사관학교 출신으로 1974년 소위로 임관한 샤프 사령관은 1996년부터 1998년까지 한미연합사 보좌관과 주한미군 2사단 작전부사단장을 지내는 등 미군의 대표적인 지한파 인사로 꼽힌다.

1999년부터는 본국으로 돌아가 3기계화사단장, 합동참모본부장 등 요직을 거쳤으며 2008년 한국에 다시 부임해 유엔사, 한미연합사, 주한미군 사령관으로 일해왔다.

샤프 사령관은 오는 14일 이임식을 마치고 미국으로 돌아가 9월께 퇴역할 예정이다. 후임으로는 제임스 D. 서먼 미국 육군전력사령관이 지명됐다.

서울시는 5일 오전 10시40분 시청 7층 간부 회의실에서 샤프 사령관 명예시민증 수여식을 연다.
