College kids work tough jobs to pay for tuition

A 25-year-old college student in his junior year recently participated in a clinical trial that a pharmaceutical company was carrying out to determine the side effects of new medications for high blood pressure. He took the pills 20 times at a hospital, which recorded his physical condition every time after he took the pills. Afterward, the hospital took two blood samples from the student and he got about 1 million won ($940).

More and more Korean college students feel pressured to take jobs that involve tough working conditions because they have to earn the money to pay for their expensive college tuition during their summer vacation.

According to a survey done by the job portal Web site Albamon, more than 550 students among 712 respondents answered that they were willing to work for higher wages in tough places like in the construction field, which is described as “working in hell” in the hot weather, or at illegal gambling places as waiters, waitresses or security guards.

A 24-year-old female college student, identified as A, has been working as a talking companion for male visitors at adult bars in Seoul. The part-time job, listed as “working at a talking bar,” is hard, she said, because she has to deal with drunken men and sometimes they pressure her to have a closer relationship with them.

However, she has endured the work because she needs tuition money for the fall and for the English hagwon where is preparing for the TOEIC [Test of English for International Communications], whose scores are often requested by Korean companies from college graduates.

Work at convenience stores and restaurants offer only about 2,500 won ($2.30) per hour while the job in the adult bar pays about 5,000 won per hour, according to A.

There are easier jobs, like working in local government offices, that require only simple word processing and miscellaneous work in a cool, air-conditioned environment. However, these jobs are highly competitive. The competition rate for these government part-time jobs is 10 to one, according to Albamon.

“Four to five years ago, college students used to work when they needed spending money for their vacations or there were expensive goods, like luxury bags, to consume,” said An Soo-jeong, an assistant manager of Albamon. “However, students began to answer recently that they work to pay for their tuition and living expenses.”

#대학교 3학년 권모(25)씨는 최근 임상시험에 참여하는 아르바이트를 시작했다. 속칭 ‘마루타 알바’다. 고혈압 신약이 인체에 제대로 반응하는지, 부작용은 없는지를 확인하기 위해 약을 복용하는 일이다. 권씨는 스무 차례 병원에 가서 약을 먹고, 사흘간 두 차례 입원해 채혈을 한 뒤 100만원을 받기로 했다. 권씨는 “병원에선 안전하다고 하지만 불안한 마음이 들곤 한다”고 했다.

　#대학교 4학년 A씨(24·여)는 최근까지 ‘토킹바’ 아르바이트를 했다. 술집에 온 손님들에게 말상대를 해주는 일이다. 등록금과 토익 응시비·학원비 등을 마련하기 위해서다. 시간당 5000원을 받는데, 최저임금을 받는 편의점이나 식당보다 수입이 좋았다. 담배연기가 자욱한 술집에서 낯선 사람과 대화를 이끌어가는 게 힘들었지만 당장 돈이 급해 어쩔 수 없이 선택한 일이었다.

　여름방학을 맞아 대학생들의 ‘아르바이트 전쟁’이 시작됐다. 다음 학기 등록금과 생활비를 벌어보려는 대학생들이 지난달 말부터 아르바이트 시장에 나서면서 구직난이 심해지고 있는 것이다. 아르바이트 전문 구인구직 포털 사이트인 ‘알바몬(albamon.com)’에서 최근 대학생 712명을 대상으로 실시한 설문조사 결과에 따르면 응답자의 92.7%가 ‘현재의 등록금 액수가 가정에 부담이 되고 있다’고 답했다. 대처 방법으로 ‘직접 아르바이트에 나서고 있다(49.2%)’는 답변이 절반에 육박했다.

　돈을 많이 준다면 ‘마루타 알바’도 할 수 있느냐는 물음에 40.6%(남성 57%, 여성 29.2%)가 ‘할 수 있다’고 답했다. 권씨처럼 신약 개발 단계에서 약물을 투여받아 효과를 검증하는 임상시험은 한 번 모집할 때마다 수십 대 1의 경쟁률을 기록할 정도로 인기다. 실험에 참여하면 약물 종류에 따라 2~3일에서, 길게는 1~2개월까지 주기적으로 채혈하고 병실에 누워 있어야 한다.

　설문조사에서 78.5%의 대학생이 ‘지옥의 알바’로 불리는 공사장 아르바이트도 돈만 많이 준다면 할 수 있다고 답했다. 사행성 게임장처럼 형사 처벌을 받을 수 있는 불법 아르바이트에 대해서도 32.2%의 대학생이 ‘할 수 있다’고 응답했다. 업무강도가 낮거나 보수가 많은 일자리는 더욱 경쟁률이 치열하다. 구청 아르바이트는 10 대 1이 넘는 경쟁률을 기록하고 있다. 문서 정리 보조 등 비교적 쉽고 편한 일이고, 선호 직업인 공무원 업무를 현장에서 접할 수 있기 때문이다.

　대학생이 선호하는 과외 아르바이트도 수수료를 받는 중개업체가 늘고, 전문 개인 과외 교사들이 늘면서 찾기가 쉽지 않다. 여대생 김모(25)씨는 “중개업체에 등록을 했는데 몇 달이 지나도 과외 연결을 못 받았다”며 “아까운 수수료만 날렸다”고 말했다.

　설문조사를 진행한 알바몬 안수정 대리는 “4~5년 전만 해도 아르바이트를 왜 하는지 물으면 ‘용돈을 벌기 위해서’ ‘사고 싶은 물건이 있어서’란 대답이 많았다”며 “최근에는 ‘등록금과 생계비를 마련하기 위해서’라고 답하는 학생이 급증하고 있다”고 말했다.

◆마루타 알바=임상시험처럼 위험이 따르는 아르바이트를 말한다. 마루타(丸太·통나무)는 제2차 세계대전 당시 일본 세균부대 중 하나였던 ‘731부대’에 의해 희생된 인체실험 대상자를 일컫는 말이다.
