[Letters] Our seniors deserve welfare and respectI read the article “Make our senior years golden” in the Korea JoongAng Daily on May 28. I have a mother and a father who are in their senior years. Whenever I think of them, I always feel sorry for them and am very skeptical about aging especially in Korea. So I was so interested in the article.
Truly a number of seniors are suffering from their economic hardship, loneliness, insecurity and fear of death. I’ve seen many cases in which parents who have sacrificed their life and money for their children are abandoned later and couldn’t be supported Their working places don’t need senior citizens as employees anymore and their life expectancy has got much longer.
I urge the government to develop a welfare system for seniors. We need systems for carrying the virtue of respect, maintaining seniors in good health, stabilizing their life and guaranteeing their rights and interests. Our seniors deserve all of that.
We all should realize that the young generations will also get older. It’s time for you and I and the government to work for seniors.
