그러나 그의 주장은 곧바로 세상에 알려지지 못했다. 와이갠드는 CBS-TV의 간판 시사 프로그램 ‘60분’ 제작진의 취재에 응했지만 거대 기업인 담배 회사는 온갖 방법을 동원해 방송을 차단했다. 결국 이 내용은 1996년 2월에야 전파를 탔다. 담배 회사가 인체에 유해한 성분을 고의로 유통시켰다는 최초의 보도였다.
