Bus strike over after agreement with union

The sudden strike that caused major headaches for about 50,000 Incheon commuters on Friday is over.

Members of the labor union and the management of Samwha Express met yesterday and the union agreed to stop its strike upon the payment of delayed wages.

According to Incheon city officials, the drivers would be back at their jobs today and the 20 bus lines affected by the strike would have normal schedules. The union and the company said they will continue to negotiate over the remaining issues.

Incheon officials mediated a bargaining meeting yesterday in city offices for the two sides and managed to get the two sides to reach an agreement that would normalize Incheon citizens’ commute.

The Samwha Company said all of the 239 stopped buses on the 20 lines that connect Incheon and Seoul will be running again today.

The labor union had gone out on the sudden strike at about 5 a.m. Friday because the company has refused to meet at the bargaining table on improving working conditions, according to the union.

According to the officials of Incheon, the company and union will continue to negotiate on the remaining issues, which include raising workers’ wages and changing 20 percent of temporary workers to regular positions.
