Korean women 1st, 2nd at U.S. Open

It was a Korean showdown at the 66th U.S. Women’s Open.

Ryu So-yeon won her first major crown at the Broadmoor Golf Club in Colorado Springs on Monday, beating compatriot Seo Hee-kyung by three shots in a three-hole playoff.

Since Kim Mi-hyun and Jang Jeong first met in a playoff at the Safeway Classic in 2000, many Korean golfers in the LPGA have squared off against each other in extra holes to determine the winner.

But this was the first time that two Koreans have gone down to the wire in a major tournament. After finishing the first playoff hole with a par, the 21-year-old Ryu sunk a 12-foot birdie on the 17th hole and collected another birdie on the 18th to seal her first major title with $585,000 in prize money. The 25-year-old Seo finished the three extra holes with a 1-over par.

“Finishing in the top 10 was my goal, so I can’t believe that I won,” Ryu told Ilgan Sports. “It will be an unforgettable moment in my life.”

With the title, Ryu became the fifth Korean to win the U.S. Women’s Open after Pak Se-ri (1998), Kim Ju-yun (2005), Park In-bee (2008) and Ji Eun-hee (2009). She also became third-youngest golfer to become the tournament champion behind Park and Pak, who captured the prestigious title at ages 19 and 20, respectively.

Ryu was especially delighted that two former winners - Pak and Ji - were witnesses to her victory on Monday. When Ryu finished her final hole with a birdie and pumped her right fist in celebration, Pak and Ji rushed onto the green and soaked her with champagne.

“Se-ri is my golf hero and I’m proud that I won in front of my hero,” Ryu said. “As for Eun-hee, I practice with her in Australia for winter training and we have a friendly relationship. It was a big boost for me that both were watching me play.”

Battle of the Koreans

After darkness - brought on by a lingering thunder storm that had disrupted the event since Thursday - halted the final round on Sunday, Ryu returned Monday morning to play the remaining three holes. She was one stroke behind Seo, who closed the 72 holes on Sunday with 3-under 281.

Ryu could have easily won the tournament if she had collected two birdies in the last three holes, but she was only able to enter the playoff thanks to a six-foot birdie on the par-4 18th hole.

“I hit my second shot with a 6-iron because there was about 170 yards and it landed near the hole,” Ryu said of her shot on the 18th. “The green had a heavy slope, but fortunately it led to the birdie.”

For Ryu, however, making it to the playoffs wasn’t so bad because she had just played three holes and was already loose, while rival Seo had to warm up at the driving range.

“It was really a big benefit for me, a huge benefit.” Ryu told The Associated Press.

The playoff started 30 minutes after Ryu finished her final round. The U.S. Open changed its rule in 2007 to include a three-hole playoff instead of a sudden-death 18th hole. Both finished the first playoff hole, the 16th, with a par, but it was the 600-yard, par-5 17th that divided Ryu and Seo’s fates.

Seo’s tee shot landed in a bunker on the right side and her second shot only traveled 100 yards, while Ryu put her first two shots in the middle of the fairway.

Under pressure, Seo made her third shot from the 264-yard point, but came up short of the green. She landed on the green on the next shot with her wedge, but then a 20-foot par putt failed to put the ball down the hole, while Ryu converted her 12-footer for a birdie, giving her a two-stroke cushion.

Gaining momentum, Ryu’s second shot on the 18th hole landed five feet from the cup. Then she notched another birdie for the final blow. Seo finished the last hole with a par.

“I did my best but Ryu did a great job,” Seo said. “I would like to congratulate her.”

The two golfers recreated their rivalry from the 2009 KLPGA season. Seo was the top golfer back then and collected the most prize money with five wins, edging out Ryu by one victory.

However, when it came to the playoffs in Broadmoor, Seo couldn’t overcome Ryu. She is now 0-2 against Ryu in head-to-head playoffs.

The two golfers first met in extra holes at the Chinese Ladies Open in December 2009, when Seo faltered with a triple bogey on the last hole.

Seo, who earned her pass to the tournament through a regional qualifier, could have lifted the trophy without hitting a shot on Monday if she had made a par putt from two feet on the 17th, the hole that brought her more misfortune in the playoff.

“I think one mistake yesterday on the 17th green, that’s the one,” Seo told The AP on Sunday.

Seo, who celebrated her 25th birthday Friday, believes that the loss will not hurt her career, saying she will advance and look for better performance in the future.

“I can trust myself,” Seo said. “We still have lots of tournaments in Europe and Asia.”

Ryu first turned professional in 2008 after collecting two gold medals in the 2006 Asian Games in Doha, Qatar.

“My dream is to enter the Hall of Fame,” said Ryu, who becomes the world’s 21st ranked player after the victory. “I think the journey starts now.”

Ryu said her next stop will be the Evian Masters in France, which begin on July 21.

한국의 잔치무대였고 기막힌 역전승이었다. 한국의 두 낭자가 시즌 세 번째 메이저대회인 US여자오픈 무대를 명승부로 수놓았다. 초청 선수로 출전한 국내파의 유소연(21·한화)과 LPGA 투어의 루키 서희경(25·하이트)이 66년 전통과 최고의 권위를 자랑하는 US여자오픈에서 나란히 우승과 준우승을 차지했다. 메이저대회인 US여자오픈 사상 한국선수끼리 연장전을 치른 것도 처음이고, 나란히 1, 2위를 석권한 것은 처음 있는 일이다. US여자오픈이 아니라 한국여자오픈이었다.

12일 오전(한국시간) 미국 콜로라도 스프링스의 브로드무어 골프장(파71·7047야드)에서 열린 대회 최종 4라운드. 유소연은 전날 대회 최종 4라운드가 일몰로 순연되면서 15번 홀까지 2언더파를 기록해 이미 경기를 끝마친 서희경(3언더파)에 1타 뒤진 단독 2위에 머물렀다. 그러나 유소연은 대회 최종 4라운드의 잔여경기 재개된 가운데 3개 홀 중 마지막 18번 홀(파4)에서 극적인 2m 버디를 낚아내며 1타를 줄여 합계 3언더파를 기록해 서희경과 연장 승부에 돌입했다. 연장전은 16, 17, 18번 홀에서 열렸다.

악천후로 인한 파행 운영으로 ‘지옥의 레이스’로 펼쳐진 US여자오픈은 결국 하룻밤 사이에 우승자의 얼굴을 바꿔 놓고 말았다. 유소연은 3개 홀 연장전에서 ‘파-버디-버디’로 2언더파를 쳐 ‘파-보기-파’로 1오버파를 기록한 서희경을 3타 차로 꺾고 역전 우승했다. 결국 연장 접전 끝에 유소연이 ‘메이저 퀸’에 등극했다. 유소연은 이로써 박세리(1998년), 김주연(2005년), 박인비(2008년), 지은희(2009년)에 이어 역대 다섯 번째 한국인 우승자로 이름을 올렸다.

대회를 주관한 미국골프협회(USGA)는 당황한 모습이 역력했다. 대회 사상 최장 코스로 세팅된데다 첫날부터 번개와 천둥을 동반한 폭우 등의 기상악화로 1, 2라운드가 순연되면서 선수들의 체력소모를 부채질했다. 급기야 최종일에는 하루에 36홀(3, 4라운드)을 한꺼번에 치르는 강행군이 펼쳐졌고 그것도 모자라 월요일까지 대회를 하루 더 연장했다. 이 극한의 싸움에서 살아남은 선수는 공교롭게도 무명이나 다름없는 유소연과 LPGA 투어 1년 차의 서희경이었다. 두 선수는 ‘언더파는 있을 수 없다’며 오버파 우승의 코스 세팅을 꾸렸던 USGA를 비웃듯 3언더파로 연장전까지 치르는 상황을 연출했다.

USGA의 코스배치 담당이자 전무인 마이크 데이비스는 “한국의 두 선수가 아주 인상적인 경기를 펼쳤다. 기상 조건 등 여러 가지 함정이 많았는데 두 선수 모두 이를 잘 극복한 것 같다”고 말했다. USGA는 “유소연의 18번 홀 버디는 수많은 갤러리를 흥분의 도가니로 몰아넣기에 충분했다”고 평가했다. 대회장에 나흘 내내 내렸던 폭우는 우승 가뭄에 시달리던 한국에 시즌 첫 승을 안겨준 단비였다.

연장전의 분위기는 두 번째 홀에서 유소연쪽으로 기울었다. 두 선수는 연장 첫 번째 홀에서 나란히 파를 기록했다. 승부는 17번 홀(파5·600야드)에서 갈렸다. 서희경의 티 샷은 오른쪽 페어웨이 벙커로 향했고 유소연의 티샷은 페어웨이 중앙을 갈랐다. 서희경은 264야드에서 친 세 번째 샷이 온 그린에 실패하며 보기를 범했다. 반면 유소연은 129야드에서 친 세번째 샷을 핀 3m에 붙인데 이어 버디를 잡으며 2타차로 달아났다. 승기를 잡은 유소연은 18번 홀에서 버디를 기록하며 승부에 쐐기를 박았다. 유소연은 2006년 도하아시안게임에서 단체전·개인전 2관왕에 오르며 2008년 KLPGA 정규투어에 데뷔했다. 2009년에는 4승을 챙기며 상금왕 등극을 꿈꿨지만 시즌 마지막 대회에서 우승한 서희경에게 양보해야만 했다. 그러나 유소연은 이날 2년의 패배를 멋지게 설욕했다.

유소연은 “톱10 진입이 목표였는데 우승을 해서 너무 기쁘다. 힘든 한주였지만 마지막까지 포기하지 않고 끝까지 최선을 다한 것이 우승할 수 있었던 원동력이 됐다. 아직도 우승이 실감나지 않다. 평생 잊을 수 없는 경기였다”며 눈물을 글썽거렸다.
