Schwarzenegger to star in Kim Jee-woon’s new film
The former action-star-turned-politician is scheduled to start shooting the Western movie “The Last Stand” - to be directed by Korea’s Kim Jee-woon - in September, a film industry source said on Monday, despite being embroiled in what could be a messy divorce from his wife, Maria Shriver.
“It’s an old-fashioned Western specifically designed for a 63-year-old broken-down guy with a moral decision .?.?. We always needed an iconic figure for it,” an unnamed movie executive told industry Web site Deadline Hollywood on Monday.
Schwarzenegger’s participation was also confirmed by Entertainment Weekly magazine.
Representatives for the former “Terminator” star, 63, declined comment on the reports, as did a spokesman for the Lionsgate film studio that is behind the movie. But an industry source who asked to remain anonymous confirmed to Reuters that the movie was going ahead as planned with Schwarzenegger in the lead role.
“The Last Stand” is expected to be released some time in 2012.

아놀드 슈왈제네거, 김지운 감독 ‘라스트 스탠드’ 출연 확정
김지운 감독의 할리우드 진출작 ‘라스트 스탠드(The Last stand)’ 출연을 고심해왔던 전 캘리포니아 주지사 겸 배우 아놀드 슈왈제네거가 사생아 스캔들에도 불구하고 주인공 역을 맡기로 최종 결정했다.
미국 연예 매체 데드라인은 한 소식통의 말을 인용, 슈왈제네거가 전 세계를 떠들썩하게 했던 사생아 스캔들이 터진 이후 칩거할 것이라는 예상과 달리 ‘라스트 스탠드’ 참석 의지를 확고히 했다고 12일(한국시간) 보도했다.
데드라인에 따르면 슈왈제네거는 이번 영화 주연을 맡아 전작에서 보여주지 못했던 색다른 연기를 선보일 예정. 이에 영화사 라이온게이트 측은 그의 스캔들 및 이혼이 향후 인기도에 어떠한 영향을 줄지 여론조사에 들어갔다는 후문이다.
그가 이렇듯 ‘라스트 스탠드’ 출연 강행 의지를 밝힌 까닭은 영화 속 주인공 캐릭터가 너무나 해보고 싶었던 배역이었기 때문. 올해 초 오스트리아 신문과의 인터뷰에서 “언젠가는 내 나이에 맞는 역할을 해보고 싶다”고 밝힌 슈왈제네거는 “액션씬이나 총격씬 같은 건 이제 좀 그렇다. 클린트 이스트우드처럼 배우로써 자극받을 수 있는 작품에 출연해 새로운 도전을 하고 싶다”고 말한 바 있다.
현재까지 그의 이번 스캔들이 영화에 영향을 끼친 부분은 전혀 없다. 하지만 촬영 시기 및 개봉 일자가 조금 미뤄질 수밖에 없을 것으로 보인다. ‘라스트 스탠드’는 오는 9월 말 크랭크인이 예정돼 있다.
한편 ‘라스트 스탠드’는 미국과 멕시코 국경 지대의 한 작은 마을을 배경으로 보안관이 멕시코 범죄조직 리더를 쫓는 내용이다. ‘좋은 놈, 나쁜 놈, 이상한 놈’의 김지운 감독이 메가폰을 잡아 큰 화제를 모았다. 당초 주연에는 리암 니슨이 유력했지만 그가 중도 하차하면서 슈왈제네거에 출연 제의가 이뤄진 것으로 알려졌다.
