A-Rod has surgery, could miss 6 weeks

MIAMI - New York Yankees slugger Alex Rodriguez had successful arthroscopic knee surgery on Monday and will now begin a recovery period that could keep him out his team’s lineup for six weeks.

The Yankees said Rodriguez, who sat out games against the Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday and Sunday, had surgery earlier on Monday at the University of Miami to correct a meniscus tear in his right knee.

“The procedure went as expected, and there were no complications,” a Yankees spokesman said in a statement. “Dr. Lee Kaplan performed the surgery and will oversee the initial rehabilitation, which will take place in Miami.”

Rodriguez, 35, hurt his knee running the bases against the Chicago Cubs last month and underwent tests Friday because of lingering soreness.

The Yankees trail the Boston Red Sox by one game in the American League East and the loss of “A-Rod” is a blow to their hopes of gaining the top spot.

“There is no doubt we’re going to miss him but we need to find a way,” Yankees manager Joe Girardi said in a statement issued before Monday’s operation.

Rodriguez, second on the team with a .295 batting average this season, played in 14 games after the injury.

[美야구] 로드리게스 무릎 수술…4∼6주 결장

미국프로야구 뉴욕 양키스의 간판타자 알렉스 로드리게스(36)가 무릎 수술을 받아 최소 한 달 이상은 뛸 수 없게 됐다.

양키스 구단은 12일(이하 한국시간) "오른 무릎 반월판이 손상된 로드리게스가 플로리다주 마이애미대학에서 수술을 받았다"고 밝혔다.

구단 측은 수술이 잘 이뤄졌지만 그라운드 복귀까지 4∼6주가 걸릴 것으로 예상했다.

13일 애리조나주 피닉스의 체이스필드에서 열리는 올스타전 출전이 무산된 로드리게스는 지난달 시카고 커브스와의 경기에서 주루 플레이를 하다가 부상했다.

이후 통증을 참고 14경기를 더 뛰었지만 지난 9일부터 출전하지 못하고 있다.

로드리게스는 올 시즌 80경기에서 타율 0.295, 13홈런 52타점을 기록했다.
