All eyes on Rory at British Open

SANDWICH, England - The strong wind blowing Tuesday across Royal St. George’s was just another sign that the moonscape masquerading as a golf course on the English coast would offer a vastly different test than the one solved so easily by Rory McIlroy at the U.S. Open.

The British Open can be a puzzle of its own, as McIlroy found out last year when he followed an opening 63 with a big fat 80 when the wind started howling at St. Andrews. He was too young, it was too early and someone else got their name on the claret jug.

Then came four days at Congressional Country Club that made people forget Tiger Woods isn’t playing much golf these days. Now comes a week that might tell us as much about McIlroy as he found out about himself at the U.S. Open. A week that could answer the question of the past month: Just how good can McIlroy be?

We already know the kid is the real thing. He proved that by taking a victory lap around Congressional on the final Sunday in an eight-shot rout that brought back visions of the way Woods used to toy with fellow competitors.

But will McIlroy win major championships in bunches? Will he dominate over time the way he dominated a few weeks back?

History suggests not. Players who are truly great come along only once every era, and this era already has one. But sitting in a packed interview room Tuesday, McIlroy suggested yes.

“All I need to do is focus on my game, and if I can do that, I know my good golf is good enough to win plenty more tournaments,’’ he said.

That no one doubts. McIlroy’s swing is a beauty reminiscent of other times, and his putting is good enough to carry him if that lets him down.

Whether it will happen this week is another matter. Although British bookmakers have made McIlroy a prohibitive favorite, only six players have won both the U.S. Open and British Open in the same year in the long history of both championships.

Erasing the inevitable hangover that comes from victory might be the hardest part for McIlroy.

“It will be interesting to see,’’ said Graeme McDowell, a fellow Northern Irishman who won the U.S. Open last year, then went into a slump. “It’s going to be overwhelming for him. That’s how it was for me last year.’’

Unlike McDowell, though, McIlroy seemed to be building for his big win long before it happened. He was in contention at three majors before finally breaking through, learning some painful lessons that served him well when he was poised to win his first major title at the U.S. Open.

He has led seven of the eight rounds of the two major championships so far this year, and managed to come back from a final round collapse at the Masters to lap the field at Congressional.

Like a fighter who gets better after he wins a title, McIlroy believes he will be better now that no one’s asking when he will win his first major.

“It has lifted a huge weight off my shoulders,’’ he said. “Now I can talk about winning my second one after having won the first.’’

It’s hard to find anyone rooting against McIlroy adding that second major. The unassuming 22-year-old with a mop of curls has a connection with fans that even Woods would envy, and he brings excitement to a sport that has been badly missing it ever since Woods crashed his SUV one fateful Thanksgiving night.

“The thing about Rory is that he plays golf with a real flair and a real charisma, and I think fans are drawn to that,’’ Phil Mickelson said.

환갑 넘은 왓슨도, 손자뻘 매킬로이도 ‘우승하러 왔소’

디 오픈(브리티시 오픈)의 최고령 우승자는 1867년 46세로 챔피언이 된 톰 모리스다. 이 대회 최연소 우승자는 1868년 17세로 챔피언이 된 톰 모리스다. 이름이 똑같은 아버지와 아들이다. 부자 모두 이 대회를 4회씩 우승한 전설적인 인물이다. 골프계에서는 아버지를 올드 톰 모리스, 아들은 영 톰 모리스라고 부른다.

또 다른 톰, 톰 왓슨(62·미국)은 14일(한국시간) 영국 남부의 샌드위치에 있는 로열 세인트 조지스 골프장에서 시작될 올해 디 오픈에서 144년 묵은 최고령 우승 기록이 깨질 수도 있다고 생각하고 있다. 왓슨은 “50대 선수가 우승 못할 이유가 없다. 이 코스는 전장을 늘렸지만 링크스에서는 볼을 아주 멀리 때릴 필요가 없다”고 말했다. 대회에 출전하는 50대 선수들은 샌디 라일, 톰 레먼, 마크 오메라 등이다.

50대 우승 발언은 왓슨 자신이 우승할 수 있다는 말을 돌려 한 것이다. 그는 지난 5월 시니어 PGA 챔피언십에서 우승했다. 프레드 커플스 등 갓 50대에 들어선 선수들도 출전하는 시니어 메이저대회에서 62세인 그가 챔피언이 된 것이다. 디 오픈에서 50대 선수가 우승할 수 있다면 그 주인공은 자신이 될 수 있다는 얘기다. 왓슨은 “나는 이곳에 우승하러 왔다. 상승세이며 공을 잘 치고 퍼트도 잘 하고 있다”고 말했다.

왓슨은 링크스 코스에서 열리는 디 오픈에서 유난히 강하다. 그는 메이저 8승 중 5승을 링크스에서 했다. 60세이던 2009년에도 거의 우승할 뻔했다. 왓슨은 “링크스 골프는 다른 종류의 골프다. 골퍼를 다른 각도에서 테스트한다. 이 독특함은 매우 특별하다”고 말했다. 왓슨은 파 70에 전장이 7211야드로 꽤 긴 이 코스에서 240야드 파 3홀 두 개만 힘이 달리고 나머지는 거리에서 문제가 없다고 했다. 왓슨은 “이 코스는 적이라기보다는 친구에 가깝고 경험이 중요한 요소가 될 것”이라고 했다.

왓슨의 기대와는 별도로 도박사들이 가장 많은 돈을 거는 선수는 왓슨의 손자뻘인 로리 매킬로이(22·북아일랜드)다. 젊고, 솔직담백하며 화끈하면서도 깔끔한 스윙을 하는 매력적인 매킬로이의 우승에 3만 달러를 건 사람도 더러 있다고 한다. 매킬로이는 아일랜드에 살고 있어 링크스에 익숙하다. 지난해 이 대회 1라운드에서 메이저대회 최소타인 63타를 치기도 했다. 매킬로이는 “기복 없는 안정된 경기를 하는 것이 좋다. 그러나 내가 생각하는 ‘안정’은 다른 사람들이 생각하는 것보다 높은 것”이라고 말했다.

매킬로이의 가장 큰 짐은 이런 주위의 기대다. 그는 지난해 63타를 치면서 전 세계의 스포트라이트를 받게 되자 2라운드 80타를 치며 허무하게 무너졌다. 올해 마스터스에서도 그랬다. 매킬로이는 “관심의 한가운데 있는 것을 좋아한다. US오픈에서 많은 사람이 나를 따라다녔는데 전혀 문제가 없었다”고 말했다. 그러나 몇 차례 무너진 기억을 완전히 떨쳐버리기는 어렵다.

그가 기댈 곳은 부모의 사랑이다. 매킬로이는 “부모님이 나를 위해서 얼마나 열심히 일했는지를 알고 있다. 이제 그들의 노고에 보답할 수 있게 되어 아주 기분이 좋다. 경기장에서 아버지를 바라보면 힘이 생길 것”이라고 했다. 그는 또 “최근 아버지와 함께 저녁 골프를 했다. 아버지와 함께한 즐거운 기억들이 되살아났다”고 말했다.

대회는 J골프가 14일부터 중계한다. 1, 2라운드는 오후 5시부터 다음 날 새벽 4시까지, 3라운드는 오후 6시부터, 4라운드는 오후 7시부터 중계한다.
