Eat your ginseng chicken soup - but be prepared to pay

Korea’s traditional agricultural calendar designates three summer days as the hottest and today, known as Chobok, is the first. The traditional foods to keep cool and healthy in the heat are dog soup, broiled eels and ginseng chicken soup.
But if you choose the chicken today, it’s going to take a bigger chunk out of your pocketbook than before.
Restaurant owners said the price for ginseng chicken soup, or samgyetang, has jumped by up to 2,000 won ($1.90) this summer due to inflation. An average serving now costs between 13,000 and 15,000 won.
Normally, samgyetang, made with a chicken, rice, chestnuts, jujubes, ginseng and other herbs, sells for an average of 12,000 won.
The luxury version, which adds abalone or uses wild ginseng, sells today for 20,000 to 25,000 won.
With restaurants charging more, discount chains like E-Mart are scrambling to sell samgyetang ingredients for people to cook at home.
E-Mart began to sell chickens for a promotional price of 3,450 won, down from about 5,000 won.
It’s also selling ginseng chicken soup packs, half-cooked samgyetang that can be completed in a microwave, for 7,000 won.
“Many customers came to purchase the ingredients last week,” an E-Mart staffer said. “I think many people decided to cook samgyetang due to the increased price at restaurants and the bad weather, too.”
In order to enjoy samgyetang on Chobok without paying extra, many people scoured social commerce sites for coupons that give discounts of 30 to 50 percent.
Last month, one of the major social commerce sites, Coupang, offered 2,000 coupons that lowered the price 6,000 won. They sold out in a single day. Samgyetang coupons were so popular they were featured by sites at least 10 times over the last month.
Another option is ordering a half-portion of samgyetang at a restaurant, but many Koreans find that unsatisfying.
The two remaining hottest days on the traditional calendar are Jungbok, which falls on July 24 this year, and Malbok on Aug. 13.

한 그릇 2만원 … 금계탕된 삼계탕
직장인들 “반계탕 사먹을 곳 찾아요”
13일 오전 11시 서울 중구 롯데마트 서울역점. 이른 시각이어서 매장 안이 비교적 한산했다. 하지만 초복을 앞두고 마련된 생닭 코너에는 손님 10여 명이 모여 있었다. 육류팀 직원들은 박스를 나르며 생닭을 진열대에 채워넣고 있었다. 남편과 함께 3500원짜리 생닭을 쇼핑카트에 담은 한 50대 주부는 “요즘 삼계탕 값이 올라 밖에서 둘이 사 먹으면 3만원 가까이 나온다“며 “집에서 직접 끓여 먹을 계획”이라고 말했다.
치솟는 물가는 삼계탕 가격에도 예외 없이 반영되고 있다. 초복을 하루 앞둔 이날 본지가 서울 시내 유명 삼계탕집 17곳의 삼계탕 가격을 조사했더니 3분의 1인 6곳이 전년보다 500~2000원씩 가격을 올린 것으로 나타났다. 일반 삼계탕 가격은 1만3000~1만5000원대가 가장 많았다. 시민 안득현(28)씨는 “1만원 정도가 적당한 것 같은데 요즘 값이 너무 올라 사 먹기가 부담스럽다”고 말했다. 이에 대해 한 삼계탕 집 주인은 “생닭과 밤, 대추 등 식자재 가격이 올라 인상이 불가피했다”고 설명했다. 그러나 한국외식개발연구소 김승기 소장은 “생닭 2800원, 찹쌀 250원(80g), 이외 마늘·대추·수삼·밤 등 부속 재료에 김치 등 반찬까지 포함해도 삼계탕 한 그릇의 원가는 4400원 정도로 추산된다”고 말했다.
이렇듯 가격이 올랐다고 해도 삼계탕은 복날 포기하기 힘든, 서민들의 대표적 보양 음식이다. 최근 취업포털 잡코리아가 남녀 직장인 506명을 대상으로 설문조사를 한 결과 응답자의 43.9%가 “매번 복날을 챙긴다”고 답했고 49.6%는 “가끔, 가능하면 복날을 챙긴다”고 답했다. 복날 선호하는 보양식은 ▶삼계탕(83.2%) ▶보신탕(11.9%) ▶장어요리(9.1%) ▶오리요리(7.7%) 등 순이었다(복수 응답).
삼계탕이 ‘비싼 음식’이 되면서 시민들은 각종 대안을 찾고 있다. 대학생 류혜원(26·여)씨는 이번 초복에 집에서 삼계탕을 끓여 먹을 계획이다. 류씨는 “복날이 다가오면 닭값도 오르기 때문에 미리 닭을 사두었다”고 했다. 닭과 부속재료를 따로 살 필요 없이 제품 그대로 넣고 끓이기만 하면 되는 즉석 삼계탕도 인기다. 이마트 홍보팀은 “이달 들어 즉석 삼계탕은 총 12만여 개, 생닭은 24만여 마리가 각각 판매됐다”고 말했다. 전년 같은 기간 대비 각각 3.4%, 2.1% 늘어난 것이다.
여러 명의 고객이 함께 저렴한 가격으로 물건을 구매할 수 있는 소셜 커머스 사이트에서도 삼계탕이 인기 상품으로 떠올랐다. 티켓몬스터·쿠팡·그루폰 등 주요 소셜 커머스 사이트에서는 지난달부터 10여 차례 이상 삼계탕 쿠폰이 판매됐거나 판매 중이다. 지난달 쿠팡이 판매한 한 삼계탕집의 쿠폰(정가 1만2000원, 할인가 6000원)은 하루 만에 준비한 물량 2000장이 모두 동나 1000장이 추가로 판매되기도 했다.
반계탕·닭곰탕 등으로 저렴한 가격에 복날 기분을 내겠다는 이들도 있다. 회사원 김모(29·여)씨는 “이번 초복엔 친구와 함께 반계탕 파는 곳을 찾아보기로 했다”고 말했다.
삼계탕 외에 다른 보양음식 가격도 오른 상태다. 송파구 방이동의 한 보신탕집은 지난 3월 수육과 전골 가격을 각각 2000원씩 올렸다. 용산구 동자동의 한 장어집도 지난 5월 장어정식 가격을 2만원에서 2만2000원으로, 중구 충무로의 또 다른 장어집은 장어구이(1㎏) 가격을 5만원에서 5만5000원으로 올렸다.
