Korean ballerina to join Paris Opera Ballet

Park Sae-eun, 22, will next month become the first Korean ballerina to join the prestigious Ballet de l’Opera national de Paris.

Park, a third-year student at the Korea National University of Arts, auditioned for the Paris Opera Ballet on July 4 and finished third among more than 100 applicants. Her father, Park Hyo-geun, said she received an offer to sign with the company the next day.

Park signed the contract that Friday before departing for Korea, she said on Twitter, and the contract will last until the spring. She said she plans to stay in Korea until late August.

Park is the second Korean to enter the Paris Opera Ballet after Kim Yong-gul, a male dancer, paved the way for Korean dancers in 2000.

Park’s entrance into one of the world’s premier dance companies comes after a series of high-profile awards in three of the four top international ballet competitions. She notched a silver medal in the junior division of the 2006 USA International Ballet Competition in Jackson, Miss. and won first-place prizes in the 2007 Prix de Lausanne in Switzerland and the 2010 IBC Varna in Bulgaria.

Her first place finish in Lausanne earned her a spot with the American Ballet Theatre II, where she performed for two years. She returned to Korea in May 2009 to join the Korea National Ballet Company and entered the Korea National University of Arts that year.

The centuries-old Paris Opera Ballet holds 180 performances every season, according to its Web site. Most of the 154 predominantly French dancers, whose average age is 25, have progressed through the company’s ballet school.

Park wrote on Twitter last Thursday that, by law, at least 95 percent of the Paris Opera Ballet must be comprised of French nationals.

The Paris Opera Ballet has had a number of famous dancers in its ranks, including the legendary Russian ballet dancer Rudolf Nureyev, who served as its choreographer from 1983 to 1993, and Sylvie Guillem, the company’s top-ranking ballerina from 1984 to 1989.

박세은, 파리오페라발레단 입단 제안받아

발레리나 박세은(22)이 영국 로열 발레단, 아메리칸 발레 시어터(ABT)와 함께 세계 3대 발레단 중 하나로 꼽히는 프랑스의 파리 오페라 발레단으로부터 입단을 제안받았다고 6일 밝혔다.

박세은이 이 발레단에 입단하면 한국인으로서는 현재 한국예술종합학교(한예종) 교수로 재직 중인 발레리노 김용걸에 이어 두 번째다. 김 교수는 이 발레단에서 솔리스트로 활동했다.

박세은은 이날 연합뉴스와 전화 통화에서 "지난 4일 오디션을 받았으며, 어제 발레단으로부터 (준단원) 입단을 제안받았다"고 말했다.

그는 작년 불가리아 바르나 콩쿠르에서 금상을 비롯해 2006년 미국 IBC(잭슨 콩쿠르)에서 금상 없는 은상, 2007년 로잔 콩쿠르에서 1위에 입상하는 등 세계 4대 발레 콩쿠르 중 세 곳을 휩쓸었다.

로잔 콩쿠르 입상 특전으로 아메리칸 발레 시어터의 세컨드 컴퍼니인 ABT 스튜디오 컴퍼니(ABT Ⅱ)에서 1년여간 활동했으며, 귀국한 뒤 국립 발레단에 입단해 활동하다 모교인 한예종으로 돌아가 학업을 이어왔다.

박세은은 그러나 다음 달 네덜란드 국립 발레단에 정단원 입단이 예정돼 있어서 파리 오페라 발레단 입단 여부는 좀 더 고민해봐야 할 것 같다고 덧붙였다.

김용걸 교수는 "만일 세은이가 파리 오페라 발레단에 준단원으로 입단하게 되면, 우선은 오는 9월부터 내년 4월까지 활동하게 된다. 정단원이 되려면 내년 여름에 열릴 가능성이 있는 정단원 오디션을 다시 봐야 할 것"이라고 말했다.
