Origami master lives for the fold

Late one winter night last January, Lee In-sung, a 16-year-old sophomore at Sintaein High School, was awake folding paper under the covers at his home in Jeongeup, North Jeolla. The only source of light was that from his father’s cell phone.

Although Lee has had a passion for origami since he was young, this night was different. Lee had decided to recreate a particularly complex origami piece by his favorite artist, Japanese origami master Kamiya Satoshi.

“All I can say is that origami folding is different from studying; once you start folding, you can’t stop,” Lee said. “And with a complex piece like Kamiya’s, time is very precious.”

His father, who was sleeping in the bed next to his son and had been awakened by the noise of the rustling paper, finally put a stop to the activity. “That’s enough for tonight,” said his father, who knows his son could stay up all night folding the delicate papers.

For Lee, origami has become more than a hobby. It has become a lifetime obsession. Lee started origami at age 9, when he first encountered an origami book. He was intrigued by the fact that a piece of paper could create either a boat or plane, without any glue or scissors.

Last May, he won third place for one of his creations at the Jeonju Hanji Crafts Fair.

As someone who showed no interest in academics or sports, Lee said he was able to find his talent through origami.

Lee said he discovered Kamiya through an internet cafe when he was in his first year of middle school and he was inspired by the artist’s mythological creatures, insects and animated characters.

Because his family was not wealthy, Lee was unable to regularly attend origami academies. Lee’s father had previously worked in a factory, but suffered an accident that prevented him from working. Lee’s mother and grandmother have also encountered obstacles; therefore the family depends on the basic standard family subsidy they receive from the government.

Things changed three years ago, when Lee won a scholarship from World Vision through the International Relief and Development Organizations for Advocates that allowed him to attend an origami academy. Origami students usually take two to three years to achieve an Elementary Master’s certification; but Lee received his in just eight months.

At the academy, Lee was lucky enough to see Kamiya’s collection. One origami piece costs over $100, so the thought of buying a piece was inconceivable he said. Instead, he has refolded multiple origami pieces more than 200 times.

After achieving his master’s certification, Lee became an origami instructor. He now teaches in the origami club he started at his school and is a volunteer teacher at his town’s youth cultural center.

Lee said he used to be a kid without a dream or a hobby. He didn’t even have confidence in contemplating or thinking about a dream. But now he has origami and Kamiya, he said.

“There are lots of people who are much better than me at origami,” Lee said. “But I don’t think there is anyone who loves it as much as I do. And someday I hope to become an artist like Kamiya.”

‘종이접기 신동’ 신태인고 2년 이인성군

가미야처럼 솟구치는 용 접고 싶어요

겨울 밤이 유난히 길었던 지난 1월 전북 정읍시 태화동. 인성이가 어두컴컴한 이불 속에서 종이를 접고 있었다. 불빛이라곤 아버지(51) 휴대전화에서 새어 나오는 것이 전부였다.

“인성아, 이제 그만 자라.”

아들 옆에서 모로 누워 있던 아버지는 부스럭거리는 소리에 잠이 깼다. 어머니와 남동생도 덩달아 몸을 뒤척였다. 평소에도 종종 이불 속에서 종이를 접다 가족들이 깨면 잠자리에 들던 인성이었지만 이날만큼은 하던 것을 멈출 수 없었다. 일본의 종이 접기 대가 가미야 사토시(30)의 작품 중 ‘공룡’을 처음 접기 시작한 날이어서다. 천재 작가 가미야는 인성이가 제일 좋아하는 작가다.

“다른 공부와는 달리 종이는 한 번 접으면 잊혀지지 않았어요. 가미야의 작품처럼 어려운 작품을 만나면 잠잘 시간도 아깝답니다.”

이인성(16·신태인고 2년)군은 초등학교 3학년 때 교실에 비치된 책에서 종이 접기를 처음 만났다. 풀이나 가위 없이 오로지 종이 한 장만으로 배나 비행기를 만드는 것이 신기했다. 공부나 운동엔 흥미를 못 느끼던 그에게 가장 잘 할 수 있는 놀이가 생긴 것이었다. 이군이 가미야의 작품을 처음 본 것은 중학교 1학년때 인터넷 카페에서다. 신화 속 동물, 곤충, 애니메이션 캐릭터 등을 주로 접는 그는 세계에서 손꼽히는 작가다. ‘류진’이란 황룡은 한 장의 종이로 비늘 하나하나까지 표현해 1400만원에 팔리기도 했다.

그러나 이군은 가정 형편 때문에 맘껏 학원에 다닐 수 없었다. 아버지는 젊은 시절 공사장에서 다쳐 아무 일도 하지 못했다. 이군의 어머니와 할머니에게도 장애가 있어 이들 가족은 기초생활수급비로 생계를 이어갔다.

이런 이군에게 3년 전 기회가 찾아왔다. 국제구호개발옹호기구인 월드비전의 후원을 받아 학원에 다니게 된 것이다. 이군은 그간의 연습으로 다른 학생들은 2~3년 걸리는 초급 사범 자격증을 8개월 만에 땄다. 학원에서 가미야의 작품집을 본 것도 행운이었다. 10만원이 넘어 살 엄두를 내지 못하던 것이었다. 이군은 물 만난 물고기처럼 많게는 한 작품을 200번 이상 접기도 했다.

사범 자격증을 따고 나선 강사로 나섰다. 고교 내에 동아리를 만들어 동기들 앞에서 가르쳤고, 최근엔 청소년문화센터에서 어린이를 대상으로 자원봉사 수업도 진행 중이다. 지난 5월엔 전주한지공예전에서 동상을 받았다. 이군은 한때 꿈이 없던 아이였다. 취미도 특기도 없었다. 꿈에 대해 사색하고 고민할 자신만의 공간도 없었다. 이젠 인성이에겐 종이 접기가 있고 가미야가 있다. “저보다 잘하는 친구도 많아요. 하지만 저만큼 종이 접기를 사랑하는 사람은 없다고 생각해요. 언젠가 저도 가미야처럼 훌륭한 작가가 되고 싶어요. 가미야 선생님, 제 멘토가 돼주세요!”
