Lions send Kadokura down after long slump

In a sign that the KBO’s Samsung Lions might be ready to part ways with veteran Japanese pitcher Ken Kadokura, the team demoted the 38-year-old starter to its minor-league club, and manager Ryu Jung-il said on Sunday he needs to improve.

The last time Ryu said something similar about an overseas player on his team, that player was released.

Former Cleveland Indians first baseman Ryan Garko, 30, was demoted to the Lions’ minor-league team last month after tallying just one home run in 58 games. Ryu told reporters then that he would be going to the second team to get back to basics. Garko was released last week.

To fill Garko’s slot, the Lions signed right-handed pitcher Doug Mathis from the Oakland Athletics last Thursday to a $170,000 deal for the remainder of the season. And the 28-year-old American is expected to take Kadokura’s spot in the Lions starting rotation - a bad sign for the Japanese pitcher.

Kadokura made a bit of a name for himself after helping lead the SK Wyverns to a Korean Series victory last year over his current team and for being the only Japanese pitcher in the KBO this year - it’s rare for NPB players to hop over the East Sea to play in Korea.

He started out the year in fine form, and got even better in May, when he went 2-1 with a 1.26 ERA in four starts. But he fell into a mighty slump in June, when he had a 8.69 ERA and opponents hit .333 off him. The former Chunichi Dragons and Yomiuri Giants player allowed six runs in 12 innings this month before getting demoted.

But Kadokura’s biggest worry might be a lingering knee injury, which some baseball experts say might be affecting his velocity. “There is damage on Kadokura’s left knee cartilage,” said Lions trainer Kim Hyun-kyu. “He sometimes feels severe pain and it doesn’t look good.”

The Lions took a gamble on Kadokura after the Wyverns passed him over when they discovered his injury late last year. The pitcher decided not to get surgery and signed with Samsung in January.

Kadokura said in a recent interview with Ilgan Sports that he feels “all right,” but in his most recent KBO games, he has been seen limping off the mound.

The Daegu-based team is looking at another playoff run and with only one of its starters, lefty Cha Woo-chan, performing up to standard, the Lions may need Kadokura, or someone else, to step up soon.

‘2군 강등’ 카도쿠라, 제2 가코 되나

“1명만 바꿉니다”에서 “두고 봐야한다”로 류중일 감독의 말이 바뀌었다. 삼성 외국인 투수 카도쿠라 켄(38)의 입지가 점점 좁아지고 있다.

삼성은 카도쿠라를 17일 1군 명단에서 제외했다. 류중일 감독이 밝힌 이유는 "컨디션 조절 차원"이었다. 한 달 전으로 시계를 돌려보자. 류중일 감독은 지난달 외국인 타자 라이언 가코가 2군으로 내려갔을 때도 비슷한 말을 했다. 그러나 가코는 1군이 아닌 미국으로 갔다. 카도쿠라의 2군행을 단순한 컨디션 조절 차원으로만 봐선 안 되는 이유다.

카도쿠라는 지난달부터 계속 부진하다. 6월 한 달간 평균자책점이 8.69로 높았다. 7월도 그저 그랬다. 12이닝 동안 6점을 내줬다. 호투를 거듭한 4~5월과는 180도 다르며, 삼성이 기대한 에이스의 역할도 못해주고 있다. 카도쿠라는 두 달 동안 7경기에 나와 고작 2승밖에 챙기지 못했다.

문제는 왼 무릎이 심상치 않다는 것이다. 카도쿠라는 최근 이닝을 마치고 마운드를 내려올 때마다 절뚝거린다. 본인은 "괜찮다"고 하지만 스피드가 시즌 초반보다 많이 떨어졌다. 김현규 삼성 트레이너는 "카도쿠라의 왼쪽 무릎연골에 손상이 있다. 통증이 심한 날이 있는데 요즘 좀 안 좋은 것 같다"고 말했다. 결국 최근 구위 저하는 왼 무릎 부상과 무관치 않다는 해석이 가능하다. 류중일 감독도 "상태를 지켜봐야 한다"고 했다.

삼성은 현재 선발진이 약해 고민이다. 포스트시즌에선 선발 투수의 중요성이 더욱 커지기에 단순한 고민으로 그치지 않는다. 그런데 카도쿠라는 포스트시즌 격돌이 예상되는 KIA와 SK를 상대로 약했다. 특히 KIA전에선 3경기 1패 평균자책점 23.82로 매번 난타당했다. 포스트시즌에서 제 역할을 할 가능성이 크지 않다는 얘기다.

류중일 감독은 카도쿠라와 포스트시즌까지 함께 갈 수 있느냐는 질문에 "대답하기가 좀 그렇다"고 말했다. 카도쿠라는 현재 2군 경기 등판 일정도 잡히지 않았다.
