Forgotten man Clarke lifts Claret Jug

SANDWICH, England - Sitting with the Claret Jug to one side and a pint of Guinness on the other, Northern Ireland’s forgotten man Darren Clarke basked in the glory of a British Open triumph that will be celebrated by ordinary golfers the world over on Sunday.
While the four rounds of golf the 42-year-old produced to win his first major were beyond even the wildest dreams of the vast legions of Sunday morning hackers, most could relate toClarke’s relaxed approach to life.
“I like to have a pint, I like to go to the pub and have a pint, jump on Easy Jet, fly home, buy everybody a drink ... I’m just a normal guy playing golf, having a bit of fun,” said Clarke, the oldest winner of the British Open since 1967 and one of the most popular.
Known for his love of expensive cigars and a few pints of Ireland’s most famous liquid export, the Dungannon native said Sunday’s masterful three-stroke victory over Americans Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson might even interfere with a planned weight-loss program.
Clarke’s refreshing absence of airs and graces has made him a favorite with British golf fans down the years and he tugged on a nation’s heart strings in 2006 when he starred in Europe’s Ryder Cup victory over the United States shortly after his wife Heather died of breast cancer.
She was in his thoughts as he walked down the 18th with cheers ringing in his ears on Sunday.
“In terms of what’s going through my heart, there’s obviously somebody who is watching down from up above there, and I know she’d be very proud of me,” said Clarke, who has since gotten engaged to former Miss Northern Ireland Alison Campbell.
“She’d probably be saying, I told you so. But I think she’d be more proud of my two boys and them at home watching more than anything else. It’s been a long journey to get here. As I say, I’m 42 and I’m not getting any younger.”
Clarke, who was once in among the top 10 in the world, has indeed been in decline and arrived at Sandwich firmly in the shadow of compatriots Graeme McDowell and Rory McIlroy, winners of the last two U.S. Opens.
A natural player in windy, links conditions, though, Clarke eclipsed both men with rounds of 68, 68, 69 and 70 in some of the roughest weather seen at a British Open for many years.
It was a masterful performance and after winning golf’s most historic major in his 20th try, Clarke said he has the hunger to challenge for more.
“You know, bad times in golf are more frequent than the good times,” he said. “There’s been times I’ve been completely and utterly fed up with the game.
“But now, can I say that’s it, I’m going to retire now? I can’t. I’ve got to keep on playing. To be the Open champion is just incredible. I’ve got to go back now, reassess and set some more goals. To win another couple of these.
“I still feel as if I can compete with the best players in the world, and that’s what I want to do.”
For the locals back across the Irish Sea at Portrush Golf Club, home of Clarke, McDowell and the precocious McIlroy, celebrations are becoming regular occasions - such is the success of Northern Ireland’s golfers in the past 14 months.
“They’re probably all having a drink in Portrush,” Clarke said. “If they’re not, I hope they are. Northern Ireland is a very small place and it’s all a very close-knit community and everyone is very pleased for our sporting guys that do well, and I’m pleased to join them.”
With that, Clarke headed off out to begin his own celebration but only after sending several cases of champagne down to the world’s media still describing an extraordinary day for an ordinary bloke from Northern Ireland.

넘치는 재능을 파티에 쏟아붓던 대런 클라크(43·북아일랜드)의 패자 부활방식은 자기관리였다. 43세의 베테랑 클라크가 18일 새벽(한국시간) 영국 샌드위치의 로열 세인트 조지스 골프장(파70·7211야드)에서 끝난 디 오픈 최종라운드에서 이븐파 70타를 쳐 최종합계 5언더파 275타로 우승했다.
클라크의 전성기는 10년 전이었다. 2000년 그는 월드골프챔피언십(WGC) 시리즈 매치플레이 챔피언십 결승에서 타이거 우즈(미국)를 4홀 차로 꺾고 우승했다. 2003년에도 WGC 시리즈에서 우승했는데 우즈를 제외하고 WGC에서 다승을 한 선수는 그가 처음이었다. 그는 12언더파 60타를 기록하기도 했고 세계랭킹 톱 10에 오랫동안 머물렀다.
그는 낭만주의자였다. 최고급 와인과 아바나 시가를 즐겼고 럭셔리 시계인 오드마 피게와 명품 옷을 걸쳤다. 고급 자동차도 수집했다. 한때 그의 집에는 BMW M6 컨버터블, 람보르기니, 페라리, 메르세데스벤츠와 벤틀리가 있었다. 위트가 넘치고 사람 만나기도 좋아하는 파티광이어서 인기가 높았다. 동료 프로골퍼들도 그를 좋아한다. 함께 라운드하고 싶은 선수 1위에 단골로 뽑힌다. 2005년엔 아일랜드 우표 모델로 등장하기도 했다. 그래서인지 재능 면에서는 세계 최고라는 평가를 들으면서도 클라크는 메이저대회에서는 우승하지 못했다.
클라크는 2006년 부인을 유방암으로 잃었다. 장례식 3주 후 부인의 유언에 따라 나간 라이더컵(2년마다 열리는 미국과 유럽의 대항전)에서는 전 유럽이 들썩일 만한 최고의 활약을 했다. 부인을 간호하느라 훈련을 거의 하지 못하고도 세 경기에서 모두 이겼다. 경기를 마친 그는 동료들과 함께 눈물을 철철 흘렸다. 그 장면은 감동적이었다. 그러나 그는 이후 사라졌다. 클라크는 “아이의 크리켓 경기장에 따라 나가는 등 엄마 역할까지 해야 했다”고 말했다.
그가 재기하기 시작한 것은 2008년부터다. 현재 세계랭킹 2위 리 웨스트우드(잉글랜드)와 클라크는 각별한 관계다. 술 친구로 함께 체중이 불었고 자가용 비행기를 공동으로 전세를 내 다니는 절친한 사이다. 웨스트우드가 독하게 마음을 먹고 살을 빼기 시작하자 클라크도 영향을 받았다.
클라크는 “이런 몸으로는 메이저 우승을 할 수 없다고 생각했다”고 한다. 비싼 자동차도 대부분 팔아치우고 고향인 북아일랜드 포트러시로 이사했다. 그의 아버지 고드프리는 “복잡한 도시를 떠나 고향으로 돌아온 것이 아들이 마음의 평안을 찾은 가장 큰 이유”라면서 “메이저대회 마지막 라운드를 친구들과의 라운드처럼 편하게 경기했다”고 했다. 워낙 술을 좋아하는 사람이라 뱃살을 완전히 빼지는 못했다. 담배도 끊지 못했다. 그러나 적당한 운동은 그의 재능을 다시 일으키기에 충분했던 것 같다. 2008년 클라크는 유러피언 투어 2승을 하면서 다시 일어섰다. 그래도 43세나 되는 클라크를 눈여겨보는 사람은 없었다. 그러나 클라크는 자신을 믿었다고 한다.
그는 디 오픈 출전 20회 만에 첫 우승컵에 입을 맞췄다. 그의 낭만은 사라지지 않았다. 클라크는 우승한 뒤 “조직위가 허락한다면 우승컵에 아일랜드의 검은색 액체(기네스 맥주)를 한껏 부어 마시겠다”고 웃었다. 그러나 그는 ＂다시 옛날의(뚱뚱한) 나로 돌아가지 않겠다”고 했다. 클라크는 지난해 12월 미스 북아일랜드 출신의 미녀 앨리슨 캠벨과 약혼했다.
