Lee’s no good at politics, says Hong

The new chairman of the Grand National party issued a withering criticism of President Lee Myung-bak yesterday, an indication of the growing distance between the ruling party and the president toward the end of his term and in advance of the 2012 presidential election.

In front of about 700 party members yesterday, GNP Chairman Hong Joon-pyo gave a lecture that included a lengthy, negative evaluation of Lee and his presidency.

“The president is good at everything, including diplomacy, but bad at politics,” Hong said, according to a GNP press release. “Because he is a former CEO, he is running the country as if he is running a company.”

Hong criticized Lee for an unpopular, high-handed attitude.

“After democratization, we live in an era when we walk the path together, and it is hard to lead the country with high-handed leadership forcing the people to follow it,” he said.

Hong said Lee works extremely hard but gets little credit because he has ignored politics and made bad appointments in his government.

“The public became disappointed and distrustful of the government because Lee’s nominees failed in their confirmation hearings since the beginning of this administration,” he said.

He also said the Lee government had no “control tower” to cope with crises, including in inter-Korean relations, and the result was that the party, government and Blue House didn’t appear to be working together.

The Blue House reacted mutedly to Hong’s blunt and public critique.

“We think of this as more advice for the success of the president and the Blue House,” said Park Jeong-ha, Lee’s spokesman.

It is unprecedented for a ruling party head to openly criticize the president for a lack of political ability. No such an incident took place during the Kim Young-sam, Kim Dae-jung or Roh Moo-hyun administrations.

Hong appeared to be grabbing the reins in the GNP-Blue House relationship to prepare for the legislative and presidential elections next year, a party source said.

한나라당 홍준표 대표가 19일 이명박 대통령에 대해 “경제·외교도 모두 잘하는데 정치를 잘 못한다”고 말했다. 여당 대표가 ‘대통령이 정치를 잘 못하고 있다’며 공개적으로 발언한 적은 김영삼·김대중·노무현 정부 땐 없었다.

홍 대표는 서울 세종문화회관에서 열린 ‘한나라 포럼’ 강연에서 “이 대통령이 정치인 출신이 아니고 CEO(최고경영자) 출신으로 회사 경영하듯 국가를 경영하면서 ‘여의도 정치인들은 탁상공론만 하고 어울려도 귀찮은 사람들’이라고 생각해 3년 반 동안 여의도를 멀리했다”며 “그동안 밤 12시에 주무시고 새벽 4시에 일어나는 대통령은 해방 이후에 없었으나 (이 대통령이) 인정을 못 받는 것은 정치를 잘 못하고 있기 때문”이라고 지적했다. 그러면서 “자기 혼자만 잘나고 똑똑해서 이끌어지는 시대가 아닌데 ‘나 혼자 갈 테니 따라오라’는 식의 리더십으로는 국가를 이끌기 어렵다”고 꼬집었다.

　홍 대표는 이 대통령의 인사 스타일과 관련해선 “믿을 만한 사람, 노블레스 오블리주(사회 지도층의 도덕적 의무) 하는 사람과 정치를 해야지 국민이 따라간다”며 “이 정부 초기부터 인사청문회를 할 때마다 낙마를 하니 국민이 실망하고 마음이 떠나간다”고 지적했다.

　한나라당 중앙위원들이 모인 자리에서 이 대통령의 ‘흠’을 들춰낸 것을 두고 정치권에선 “홍 대표가 내년 총선·대선을 의식해 이 대통령과의 차별화에 나선 것 아니냐”는 분석이 나왔다.

　홍 대표는 “이 정부가 위기가 있을 때마다 컨트롤 타워가 없다고 해서 국정현안조정회의를 만들었다”며 “앞으로는 회의에서 남북관계 등 주요 현안을 (당에서) 직접 조정하고 정책을 끌고 나갈 것”이라고 말했다. 그는 또 “대통령은 더 이상 일을 벌이지 말고 마무리해야 한다”면서 “그분이 고집이 무지 센데 지난번(7·13 당·청 회동)에 보니 고집 안 부릴 것 같다”고 했다.
