PM ‘regretful’ of Japan’s KAL boycott

Prime Minister Kim Hwang-sik said yesterday that he feels “greatly regretful” about Tokyo’s boycott of Korean Air over the airline’s special flight last month over the Dokdo islets and about Japanese lawmakers’ plan to visit nearby Ulleung Island.

Presiding over a weekly Cabinet meeting, Kim urged Japan to withdraw the ban on its civil servants’ use of Korean Air out of respect for World Trade Organization rules, according to government spokesman Park Sun-kyoo.

Japan’s Foreign Ministry has instructed its officials to refrain from taking Korean Air flights for one month starting on Monday in protest of the airline’s flight by its first Airbus A380 over Dokdo in mid-June.

Kim said he regretted the announcement by a group of lawmakers of Japan’s conservative opposition Liberal Democratic Party that they will visit Ulleung, an East Sea island between Korea’s east coast and Dokdo, early next month.

김황식 “일본 의원 울릉도 방문 계획, 대단히 유감”

김황식 국무총리는 19일 국무회의에서 최근 일본 외무성의 대한항공 이용 자제 지시와 자민당 의원들의 ‘시위성’ 울릉도 방문 계획에 대해 “대단히 유감스럽게 생각한다”고 밝혔다. 김 총리는 “특히 대한항공을 상대로 한 조치는 외교 관례뿐 아니라 세계무역기구(WTO) 협정에도 반하는 것”이라며 “조속히 철회해야 한다”고 강조했다.

　이재오 특임장관은 2013년 완공 예정인 독도해양과학기지 조감도 사진을 내보이며 “다음 정부로 미루지 말고 올해 안에 공사를 시작해 내년까지 끝내자”고 주장했다. 권도엽 국토해양부 장관은 “올해 시작하면 내년 말까진 완공이 가능하다”고 답했다. 그러나 김성환 외교통상부 장관은 “(독도를) 분쟁 지역화하려는 일본의 의도에 말려들어선 안 된다”고 반대했다. 한편 정부는 다음 달 1일 일본 우익 의원들의 울릉도 방문이 양국 관계 발전에 도움이 되지 않는다고 판단해 이들의 방한 자제를 요구할 방침이다.
