Suarez leads Uruguay to Copa America final

LA PLATA, Argentina - Liverpool striker Luis Suarez scored in the 53rd and 58th minutes to lead Uruguay past Peru 2-0 on Tuesday and into the Copa America final.

Uruguay, which reached the semifinals of last year’s World Cup, will be looking for a record 15th Copa America title in Sunday’s final. The final will be played in Buenos Aires.

Peru, which was the worst team in South American World Cup qualifying just a year ago, has been one of the surprises of the South American championship and has played without its top two forwards Jefferson Farfan and Claudio Pizarro.

Suarez added some spark after a disappointing first half of few chances and little sustained possession.

“The first half was tough because we knew Peru would be very defensive,’’ Suarez said. “We had to try to take advantage of some of the chances to score. The goal in the first few minutes was a big blow to Peru.’’

Diego Forlan set up the first goal in the 53rd minute, taking a long, low shot that Peruvian keeper Raul Fernandez dived to his left to save. Suarez swarmed on the rebound and sent the ball into the open net from a sharp angle with Fernandez sprawled on the ground.

Suarez struck again five minutes later when he received a pass near that split the Peruvian defence, then broke for goal. When Fernandez came out to stop him, he stepped around to his right and rolled the ball into the open net.

Peru had its best chance in the 84th minute when Uruguay keeper Fernando Muslera leaped high to stop Paolo Guerrero’s long shot. The ball slipped from Muslera’s hand, but he gathered that ball just inches from the goal line.

Uruguay, which is tied with Argentina with 14 Copa America titles, won its last trophy in 1995. It was the runner-up in 1999, when it lost to Brazil.

우루과이는 20일(이하 한국시간) 오전 아르헨티나 라플라타에서 열린 페루와 `2011 코파 아메리카` 준결승전에서 루이스 수아레스의 2골에 힘입어 2-1 승리를 거뒀다.

이로써 우루과이는 자국에서 치렀던 1995년 대회 이후 16년 만에 코파아메리카 우승을 노리게 됐다. 우루과이가 이번 대회서 정상에 오르게 될 경우 아르헨티나(14회 우승)를 제치고 단독으로 코파아메리카 최다 우승국의 자리를 차지하게 된다.

8강에서 개최국 아르헨티나를 꺾었던 우루과이는 사기가 절정이었다. 그러나 페루도 만만치 않았다. 양팀은 일진일퇴의 공방전을 벌이며 결승전 진출을 위해 최선을 다했다.

그러나 공격의 질이 달랐다. 우루과이는 찬스를 만들어 가며 상대 박스 내에서 슈팅을 수 차례 시도했다. 반면 페루는 우루과이 수비진을 뚫지 못했다. 전반 내내 박스 내에서 슈팅을 하지 못한 채 중거리 슈팅 위주로 경기를 풀어갈 정도였다.

작은 차이였지만 시간이 흐를수록 경기의 분위기는 우루과이쪽으로 흘러갔다. 선제골도 우루과이의 몫이었다. 후반 8분 디에고 포를란의 벼락과 같은 슈팅이 페루 골키퍼의 선방에 막혔지만, 흘러나온 공을 쇄도하던 수아레스가 잡아 슈팅으로 연결해 골문 안으로 밀어 넣었다.

한 골이 나오자 추가골도 쉽게 나왔다. 후반 13분 중원 왼쪽에서 알바로 페레이라가 길게 찔러준 패스를 잡은 수아레스가 골키퍼까지 제친 후 빈 골대로 가볍게 슛을 성공시켰다. 페루로서는 치명적인 추가골이었다. 게다가 페루는 후반 23분 마누엘 바르가스가 고의적으로 팔꿈치를 사용해 우루과이 선수를 가격하며 퇴장을 당했다.

페루는 만회골을 위해 거센 반격을 시도했지만 수적 열세 상황에서는 쉽지 않았다. 경기 주도권은 이미 우루과이의 몫이었다. 운도 없었다. 후반 38분 파올로 게레로가 아크 정면에서 기습 중거리 슈팅을 시도한 것이 골키퍼 페르난도 무슬레라의 손에 맞고 그대로 골대 안으로 들어가는 듯했지만 골라인을 통과하기 직전 무슬레라가 다시 잡았다.

결국 페루는 만회골에 실패하며 우루과이에 결승전 진출 티켓을 넘겨줘야 했다. 우루과이는 오는 25일 파라과이-베네수엘라전 승자와 결승전을 갖는다.
