Appeals hearing set in Somali pirate convictions

The first hearing in an appeal of the convictions of the five Somali pirates who hijacked the Samho Jewelry freighter in January will be held on Aug. 11 at 2 p.m. in Busan High Court.

According to Busan High Court, the five pirates involved in the hijacking, which also included the shooting of the captain of the ship, have appealed the verdict due what they say is a lack of evidence. Captain Seok Hae-gyun, 58, remains hospitalized due to the seriousness of his injuries.

During the trial, Arai Mohamed was given a life sentence for shooting Captain Seok. Brallat Aul was given a 15-year prison sentence for using sailors as human shields.

Aul and two other pirates, Abdullah Ali and Ali Abukad-Aeman, were found guilty of several other counts and were given 15 years, 13 years and 13 years, respectively.

The fifth pirate, Abdullah Hussein Mahamud, was given 15 years.

The five Somalis insist the punishment they received is too harsh, saying the Korean prosecutors did not secure enough evidence for the charges.

Among the five, Mahamud has a new attorney, Lee Seong-ryeol, and the other four Somalis, including Arai Mohamed, will keep their current public defenders.

The appeals trial will not be open to the public.
