McLaren’s Hamilton wins German GP

NUERBURGRING, Germany - Lewis Hamilton of McLaren won a hard-fought German Grand Prix on Sunday, fending off challenges from Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso and Mark Webber of Red Bull for his second victory of the season.

Hamilton started second but took the lead from Webber by the first turn, and McLaren then successfully defended the position in a cat-and-mouse game of pit stops between the top teams. Alonso finished 3.9 seconds back in second place, with Webber 9.7 seconds behind in third.

“It was one of the best races I think I’ve ever done,’’ said Hamilton, who also won the third race of the season, the Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai in April. “This is a massive step forward ... and I hope we can keep the momentum going.’’

The top three finishers were within 3 seconds of each other for long parts of the 60-lap race, and they each took turns being in the lead because of the three pits stops made by all of the top drivers. The most exciting lead change came on lap 33, when Alonso returned to the track in front after a tire change, but was overtaken by Hamilton just meters after the pit lane exit.

Championship leader Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull was fourth - the first time all season he hasn’t finished first or second. After 10 of 19 races, he tops the standings with 216 points, followed by Webber with 139 and Hamilton on 134. Alonso is fourth with 130.

자국 선수들을 외면한 F1 독일 그랑프리

독일은 저력있는 포뮬러원(F1)의 파워 하우스다. F1에는 24명의 드라이버가 출전하는 데 그 중 5명이 독일 국적이다. 최다 계파다. 또 독일의 신성 제바스티앙 페텔(레드불)은 올 시즌 9번 열린 F1중 6번이나 우승했다. 자연히 24일 독일 뉘르브르크링에서 열린 독일 그랑프리를 앞두고 게르만의 잔치가 될 것이라는 전망이 득세했다.

그러나 포뮬러 원(F1) 독일 그랑프리는 자국 선수들을 외면했다. 지난 시즌 월드 챔피언 페텔도, 월드챔피언 7회에 빛나는 황제 미하엘 슈마허(메르세데스 GP)도 시상대 위에 서지 못했다.

루이스 해밀턴(영국·맥라렌)이 우승을 차지했다. 해밀턴은 독일 뉘르부르크링 서킷(5.148km) 60바퀴를 1시간37분30초344의 기록으로 주행해 가장 먼저 결승선을 통과했다. 해밀턴은 시종일관 여유있는 레이스로 페르난도 알론소(페라리)와 마크 웨버(레드불)의 추격을 따돌리고 상하이 GP 이후 3개월 만에 시즌 2승째를 올렸다.

반면 독일 선수는 단 한 명도 3위 안에 들지 못했다. 최강자 페텔의 부진이 뼈아팠다. 페텔은 브레이크가 문제를 일으키는 바람에 줄곧 5위를 유지하다 마지막 바퀴 피트 스톱에서 펠리페 마사(페라리)를 간신히 따라잡고 4위에 오르는데 그쳤다. 독일 국적의 유일한 팀인 메르세데스의 두 독일인 드라이버 니코 로즈버그와 미하엘 슈마허도 각각 7,8위에 머물렀다. 닉 하이드펠트(르노)는 제바스티앙 부에미(토로 로소)와 충돌하는 바람에 리타이어했다. 아드리안 수틸(포스 인디아)이 시즌 최고인 6위에 오르며 그나마 선전했다.

한편 페텔이 부진에 빠지며 F1 전체 판도에도 다소 변화가 왔다. 오프 스로틀 블론 디퓨저 사용이 다시 허가된 탓인지 맥라렌 머신들의 성능은 다소 향상된 느낌이었다. 페라리 선수들 역시 시즌 초반보다 좋은 경기력을 선보였다. 페텔이 216점으로 압도적으로 앞서 있지만 3위 해밀턴(134점)과 4위 알론소(130점)의 점수 차도 초반보다 줄었다. 희박하지만 역전의 가능성도 생겼다.
