Education info system miscalculated grades

A centralized students’ data management system run by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology has miscalculated the academic grades of 29,007 middle and high school students, the ministry announced yesterday, and the agency in charge of calculating the grades is scrambling to correct the errors.

About 4,600 Korean students who used to live abroad and came back will be directly affected by the miscalculation because the special admission process for those students was started on July 1.

Students’ grades had been calculated by the National Education Information System (NEIS), which is a centralized data management system developed in 2002 that connects Korea’s elementary, middle and high schools with the country’s education district offices and the Education Ministry, allowing teachers and officers to manage education information, including students’ academic scores. The miscalculation took place when the NEIS categorized students’ grades whose original scores are the same in the case of high school students.

Education Minister Lee Ju-ho said at a press conference yesterday that the ministry has begun to examine the NEIS records and will notify 659 high school seniors whose academic grade were miscalculated with their corrected. High school seniors need correct grades as they have to apply for college admissions.

The Korean grading system categorizes students’ scores into nine grades. Students in the top 4 percent range of scores, for example, are categorized into grade 1 and students from 4 to 11 percent fall into grade 2.

After the corrections are made, a total of 2,416 students’ grades will be readjusted. The remaining 26,591 students’ scores will also be corrected, but it won’t affect their grades.

The student group that will be directly affected from the data error is Korean students abroad who transferred from overseas to Korean high schools to enter Korean universities. Many Korean universities and colleges separate students who have international school records from normal Korean students for the admission process although they are attending Korean schools now.

Students in this group may have to wait longer than they expected to know whether they are admitted to a university that they applied to because their admission process will be delayed due to the NEIS corrections.

Yonsei University in Seoul is one of them. “The grade is not a big part of the selection for students from overseas,” an admissions official said. “But we will wait for the corrected academic report from the ministry because it is still one of criteria for evaluation.”

The ministry official said about 4,627 students from overseas will be selected by 137 different Korean universities.

‘나이스 오류’ 학교들 성적 정정 비상

고3 수시준비 차질빚을까 우려…학생 추천자료 재검토

고등학생 2만9천7명의 1학기 성적이 잘못 처리된 차세대 교육행정정보시스템(NEIS.나이스)의 오류와 관련, 일선 학교들은 25일 방학 중인데도 성적을 정정하느라 분주한 하루를 보냈다.

교육과학기술부와 한국교육학술정보원(KERIS), 16개 시도 교육청은 이날 오전부터 성적 정정 대상인 학교에 공문을 보내고 오후에는 모든 대상 학교에 성적 재처리와 관련한 안내 전화를 했다.

오류가 발견된 학교들은 이날 교육청 통보를 받고서야 문제가 있다는 사실을 알게 돼 당황하는 경우가 많았다.

서울의 S고 관계자는 "수시 원서를 거의 써 가는 상황이고 학교장추천자도 결정했는데 오류 통보를 받아 난감하고 등급 변경이 있을까 걱정된다"며 "상황 파악이 잘 안되기 때문에 성적 재처리를 해서 대상 학생을 가려낼 것"이라고 말했다.

또다른 S고 관계자는 "몇 명인지 구체적으로 알려주지 않았는데 한 학년에 한두 명 해당되는 모양이다. 어찌 됐든 전체를 새로 작업해야 한다"고 말했다.

H고 관계자는 "오후에 공문을 받고 연수를 간 교무부장, 성적처리 담당교사를 들어오게 했다"고 다급한 분위기를 전했다.

대부분 학교는 성적처리계 교사 2~3명, 교무부장 등이 학교에 나왔으며 일부는 성적 재처리 작업을 일찌감치 시작했다.

J고 관계자는 "재처리 작업을 마쳤는데 각 학년에 평균 4과목 정도 잘못됐다고 통보가 왔고 3개 학년 통틀어 학생 10여명 정도 오류가 난 것으로 확인됐다"며 "어떻게든 오늘 오후까지 작업을 끝낼 것이다"고 말했다.

G고 관계자는 "재처리 작업을 해보니 오류가 있는 학생 10여명 중 등급까지 바뀐 학생은 1~2명"이라며 "결재만 받으면 학생들에게 바로 결과를 통보해줄 것"이라고 했다.

일부 학교는 다음 달 시작되는 수시모집을 앞두고 고3 학생들의 진학 상담과 서류 준비에 차질이 빚어지지 않을지 우려했다. 학생 추천과 관련한 자료를 재검토하기도 했다.

S여고 관계자는 "올해는 입학사정관제 전형이 지난해보다 이른 다음 달부터 시작돼 3학년 수험생의 면담이나 서류 준비를 일찍 끝내야 한다"며 "성적 정정이 27일 완료된다고 해도 일정상 여유가 없어 다급한 심정"이라고 말했다.

D고 관계자는 "3학년은 내신 성적을 참고로 대학에 지원하기 때문에 내신이 상담에서 가장 중요한 자료"라며 "자체적으로 전체 학생의 성적을 점검하고 학생들 본인도 직접 확인해보도록 할 방침"이라고 말했다.

나이스 오류 사태가 수시모집 자체에 미칠 파장은 제한적일 것이라는 의견도 일부 있었다.

K고 관계자는 "수시모집의 특성상 특정 대학의 특정 학과에 지원하는 학생들은 성적이 거의 비슷하기 때문에 내신보다는 논술의 영향이 더 클 것"이라며 "우려처럼 매우 큰 혼란이 일어날 가능성은 낮아 보인다"고 말했다.

이날 교과부 발표로 오류가 없음을 확인한 학교들은 안도하는 분위기였다.

강남의 K고교 관계자는 "학부모들이 걱정할까봐 문자 메시지로 `우리 학교는 교과부 정정 대상이 아니라서 문제 없다`는 사실을 알리려 한다"고 말했다.
