Dreams of being scientists buried

The 35 college students, members of an Inha University science club called Idea-Bank, were in Chuncheon, Gangwon, nurturing young schoolchildren to become future scientists.

The Inha students, who were staying in a holiday house near Sancheon Elementary School in Chuncheon, had gone to bed early after spending a tiring second day doing their volunteer work of teaching the rural students. Ten of them, tragically, will never wake up.

A landslide, caused by the torrential rain hitting the country, crashed down on the students sleeping in the house, killing the 10 students and injuring 25 others, according to Chuncheon police authorities.

The students from Inha, a university in Incheon, were pursuing their dream of becoming scientists. The volunteer work was an annual club event that provides science invention classes for kids in rural areas. It is hard work, but rewarding as well, they said.

But then disaster struck. Kim Hyeong-woo, 58, a restaurant owner who lived near the house where the students were staying, escaped with his family after feeling a strange tremor emanating from the backyard of his home.

Then the landslide hit. “Right after we escaped, the landslide swept our home away,” Kim said. “We couldn’t move for a while because we were totally terrified, but after seeing the students’ house, we had to do something.”

Kim took in the scene of the terrible wreckage nearby. There was an atmosphere of complete pandemonium, he said. Students were shouting out in pain and screaming for help, he said. “Please help! Please!” he heard. “I can’t find my arm!”

Kim jumped into the pile of mud, which was about knee-high, and rescued two students. He put them in his sedan and turned the heater to its maximum temperature for the students, who were trembling from fear and cold. Then he went back to help some more.

On the verge of tears, one survivor, Lee Beom-seok, 27, remembered his schoolmates’ last moments. “The students who were sleeping on the second floor could barely escape from the house, but people on the first floor couldn’t.”

A police official said the Inha students were aware of the bad weather prediction, but they didn’t cancel their plans to work with the kids.

“They decided to still open the science camp because they did not want to disappoint the kids who were eagerly looking forward to the event,” the official said.

After word of the tragedy spread, thousands of people, especially Inha University students, visited the Internet site of the Idea-Bank club and posted comments mourning the deaths and expressing hope that all the surviving students would come home safely.

Others just spoke of their sadness. “I heard the news from my friends when I was at home and I couldn’t believe it,” said Kim Yu-rim, 21, a member of the club. “I have close relationships with most of the members who participated in the camp.”

Kim said that she planned to go to Chuncheon to help school officials who were at the scene.

“The Idea-Bank is one of our superb student clubs that wins many prizes from many competitions,” Chung Yeong-su, vice president of the university, said. “The tragedy buried these young talented prospective scientists’ future.”

Members of the club have gone on to acquire many diverse state-approved invention patents.

27일 새벽 강원도 춘천시 신북읍 천전리 윗샘밭 산사태 현장은 아비규환이었다. 이날 0시30분쯤 산사태의 위험을 직감하고 가족 3명과 함께 승용차로 피신했던 통나무닭갈비 대표 김형우(58)씨는 멀리 가지도 못한 채 지옥 같은 현장을 목격해야만 했다.

　“살려주세요.”

　산사태가 춘천민박을 덮치자 흙더미에 휩쓸려 나온 학생들이 여기저기서 아우성쳤다. 김씨는 아들과 함께 무릎까지 빠지는 흙더미를 헤치고 필사적으로 손을 뻗었다. 많이 다치지 않은 학생 2명의 손을 잡을 수 있었다. 그는 이들을 끌어안고 자신의 승용차로 이동했다. 학생들은 공포와 추위에 부들부들 떨었다. 김씨는 자동차 히터를 최대로 올렸다. 그럼에도 학생들은 떨기를 멈추지 않았다.

　김씨가 산사태를 확인한 것은 27일 0시를 조금 넘은 시간. 잠자리에 들었던 그는 ‘우르릉 꽝’ 소리에 잠에서 깼다. 이 소리를 들은 아들 성철(31)씨가 밖에 나갔다. 집 안으로 들어온 아들로부터 ‘옆집이 무너졌다’는 얘기를 들은 김씨는 직감으로 ‘산사태가 났다’고 생각했다. 즉시 부인과 아들 등 가족을 승용차에 태운 김씨는 산사태로 길이 막힌 춘천 방향 대신 소양댐 방면으로 차를 몰았다. 그러나 100여m 위 소양강댐관리단 사택 입구 도로가 토사에 매몰돼 더 갈 수 없었다. 그는 차를 되돌렸다. 그러고는 산으로부터 가장 멀리 떨어진 나무 숲에 차를 주차시켰다. 이후 몇 분 만에 가장 많은 희생자를 낸 2차 산사태가 발생했다.

　이날 산사태로 10명의 희생자가 발생한 춘천민박에는 인하대 발명동아리 ‘아이디어 뱅크’ 회원 35명이 묵고 있었다. 이들은 26일부터 인근 상천초등학교에서 2011 여름방학 발명 캠프를 열고 있었다. 농촌 어린이에게 발명 및 과학에 대한 꿈을 심어주기 위한 캠프는 아이디어 뱅크가 발명진흥회 창의재단의 공모에 뽑혀 직접 주관한 것으로 상천초등학교 이외에 인근 4개 학교 학생 40명이 참여했다. 동아리 회원들은 사고가 나기 전날인 26일 개강식과 함께 ▶손가락 화석 ▶만화경 ▶탱탱볼 만들기 등을 지도했다.

　사고 당시 춘천민박 2층에서 잠자던 인하대 이범석(27·컴퓨터공학 4년)씨는 “잠결에 큰 소리에 깨보니 흙더미와 나무가 방안으로 밀려와 있었다”며 “2층에 있던 후배들은 가까스로 나왔으나 1층 후배들은 상당수가 빠져 나오지 못했다”고 울먹였다.

　과학도를 꿈꿨던 고 이경철(20·전자전기 1년)씨는 같은 조 동료와 함께 아이디어를 낸 전자 신호등체계가 대학창의발명대회 2차 심사를 통과, 11월까지 제품을 만들 계획이었으나 산사태로 꿈을 접게 됐다.

정영수 인하대 부총장은 “이 동아리는 특허를 출원하는 등 우수한 동아리였다”며 “발명가를 꿈꿨던 자신들의 꿈은 물론 농촌어린이에게 심어줄 꿈도 무산돼 안타깝다”고 말했다.
