Peddling mime raises money for kids

Braving this season’s heavy rain, Woo Geun-chul is on a 40-day bike trip around the country to raise money for children. His goal: to give bicycles to 100 children from low-income families.

“A bicycle widens horizons,” he said. “I want to give children the gift of dreams and memories.”

Wearing makeup for his pantomime act, Woo draws donations from passersby in various cities. So far, he has raised about 1 million won ($949) and is aiming to raise a total of 10 million won from 10,000 people, or 1,000 won from each person he meets.

Woo, 27, began his bicycle tour on July 17 at Hongik University in western Seoul.

He calls the trip “quite a warm journey.” To save money, he is sleeping in a tent and cooking his own food.

His determination to reach his goal has seen him through some tough times on the road. On July 27, the 10th day of the tour, as he was on his way from Cheongyang County to Daecheon Beach by way of Mount Chilgap in South Chungcheong, he hit a patch of heavy rain and later got a flat tire. But still he did not stop.

“If I think of the children waiting for their bikes, the heavy rain isn’t an obstacle,” Woo said.

The inspiration for the trip came three years ago. Weighed down by his workload as the assistant director of an advertising company, Woo took time off and traveled to India.

He stayed in Kolkata for a month performing pantomime for children at the Daya Dan clinic, where Mother Teresa once worked.

“I saw children who had never seen a performance having fun,” Woo said. “I felt a happiness I hadn’t tasted while working. I thought I had found what I really wanted to do.”

Upon returning to Korea, Woo joined Love Field Dawn Letter, an NGO that helps children from low-income families, and began planning his trip.

자전거로 전국 돌며 자선 판토마임 “온정 모아 어린이에게 자전거 선물”

세차게 쏟아지는 빗방울도 자전거를 멈추게 하지 못했다. ‘제법 따뜻한 여행’이란 슬로건을 내걸고 자전거로 전국을 일주하고 있는 ‘길거리 광대’ 우근철(27)씨 이야기다.

우씨는 지난 17일 서울 홍익대를 시작으로 전국 주요 도시 순회공연에 들어갔다. 판토마임을 벌이면서 기부를 받아 저소득층 어린이 100명에게 자전거를 선물할 계획이다. 1만 명에게서 1000원씩 기부를 받는 것이 목표이며, 현재까지 100여 만원을 모았다. 40일의 일정 동안 잠은 텐트에서 자고 음식도 직접 만들어 먹어 비용을 최소한으로 줄였다.

　여행 열흘째인 27일, 그는 총 270km를 달려 대천 해수욕장을 지나고 있었다. 전날 충남 청양에서 대천 해수욕장으로 가기 위해 칠갑산을 넘을 때 국지성 폭우를 만났지만 그는 빗속을 돌진했다. 빗방울이 시야를 가리고, 비포장도로를 지날 때 구멍난 바퀴가 계속 말썽을 부렸지만 멈추지 않았다. 우씨는 “자전거를 기다릴 아이들을 생각하면 폭우도 장애물이 될 수 없다”고 했다.

　우씨는 2008년 인도 여행을 하면서 이 아이디어를 떠올렸다. 광고회사 조연출로 일하다 업무에만 묻혀 사는 생활에 회의를 느끼고 훌쩍 떠난 여행길이었다. 그는 테레사 수녀가 있었던 다야단 지역에서 대학 때 배웠던 판토마임 공연을 하며 한 달간 봉사활동을 했다. 그는 “평생 공연을 보지 못한 아이들이 즐거워 하는 모습을 보고 일할 때 맛보지 못한 행복을 느꼈다”며 “정말 하고 싶은 일을 찾은 것 같았다”고 말했다.

　한국에 돌아와서는 저소득층 아이들을 지원하는 NGO 단체(사랑밭새벽편지)에 들어가 본격적으로 여행을 기획했다. 왜 자전거를 기부하려고 하느냐고 묻자 “자전거는 삶의 지평을 넓혀주는 도구”라며 “아이들에게 꿈과 추억을 선물하고 싶다”고 말했다.

　그는 이날 대천 해수욕장에서 피에로 분장을 한 채 공연을 했다. 지나가는 사람들은 청년의 신기한 몸동작에 발걸음을 멈추고 작은 온정의 손길을 보탰다. 우씨는 자신의 여행을 매일 블로그(blog.naver.com/limit012)에 올려 온라인에서도 기부를 받고 있다. 그의 ‘제법 따뜻한 여행’은 다음달 말까지 계속된다.
