We all love the half price deals. What’s not to like about the half-price promotion? However, all half-price offers have political motivation. Half price has no place in the world of economics. If you ever hear a half-price deal, you should be cautious. When a shoe company has a 50 percent off sale, the sale items are the leftovers that ⓐ have become out of fashion or unpopular designs that never ⓑ get sold at the regular price. Keeping such products would only take up ⓒ ø storage space and incur inventory maintenance cost. So the company ⓓ calculates that it is better to cash out by offering discounts. The company may offer 50 percent off the regular price, but that’s how much the shoes actually cost. You should also look at how are paying the other half. Sometimes, the entity paying the price changes but the total social cost remains the same. The Grand National Party’s half-priced tuition offer is exactly the case. The party has made little preparation for the drastic deal, and if the tuition is cut in half, you can assume that the other half will be paid by the taxpayers’ money.

We all love half-price deals. But half-price offers are often too good to be true. If you ever hear about a half-price deal, you should be cautious. In politics, half-price deals are often offered based on ulterior motives. In this case, it becomes necessary to look at who is paying for which half. Sometimes, the entity paying the price changes but the total social cost remains the same. The Grand National Party’s half-priced tuition offer is a good example of this. Writing Tip
ⓐ have become out of fashion → have fallen out of fashion
ⓑ get sold → be sold
ⓒ ø storage space and incur inventory maintenance → precious storage space
ⓓ calculates → decides to cash out(현금화)에 대한 계산이 아니라 ‘의사결정’이 필요함

Finally, “stocks” become available in the ⓐ Segok zone in Gangnam District and the Naegok zone in Seocho District in spring, 2010. The apartments were offered at a little over 10 million won per 3.3 square meters. They were called “apartment lotto” as once you are chosen to buy ⓑ the subscription, 50 percent ⓒ gain is instantly guaranteed. Even the real housing demand is waiting for the good deal, and the trend led to unusual increase in the lease demand. The offer that became a major cause of ⓓ the deposit-based lease crisis will be disappearing soon. From the beginning, continued supply of the half-price apartment deals was questionable. That may be the fate of the half price offers that sound too good to be true.

Writing Tip
ⓐ Segok zone → Segok-dong
ⓑ the subscription → an apartment
ⓓ the deposit-based lease crisis → a housing shortage
