Japanese lawmakers arrive at S. Korean airport despite entry ban

Three Japanese lawmakers arrived at a South Korean airport on Monday, defying Seoul's repeated warnings that their entry will be banned due to their attempt to reassert Tokyo's claim to the South Korean islets of Dokdo.

Yoshitaka Shindo, Domomi Inada and Masahisa Sato, all from Japan's conservative Liberal Democratic Party, arrived at Seoul's Gimpo International Airport as planned, but the South Korean government said it will ban their entry at the immigration check point and send them back on the return leg of the ANA flight they arrived on.

The Japanese legislators announced earlier that they planned to visit the South Korean island of Ulleung, located about 90 kilometers west of Dokdo in the East Sea, during a four-day trip here. The move sparked outrage among some South Korean politicians, who viewed it as another attempt by Japan to lay claim to the set of rocky outcroppings.

South Korea dismisses Japan's claims as nonsense, saying it regained control over all of its territory, including Dokdo, at the end of Tokyo's 1910-45 colonial rule. [Yonhap]

日의원 3명 "방한 강행"… 오후 일본으로 송환

울릉도를 방문하기 위해 방한을 강행한 일본 자민당 중의원의 신도 요시타카(新藤義孝)와 이나다 도모미(稻田朋美), 참의원의 사토 마사히사(佐藤正久) 의원이 1일 오전 11시10분쯤 김포공항에 도착했다.

자민당 의원들을 도착 즉시 입국 수속을 위해 입국심사대로 이동하려 했지만 법무부 출입국 사무소 관계자들이 해당 의원들을 송환대기실로 이동 시켜 입국 금지를 통보한 것으로 알려졌다.

정부는 자민당 의원들을 오후 중 전일본공수(ANA) 항공편으로 모두 돌려보낼 예정이다.

신도 의원(53)은 항공기에서 내린 뒤 취재진들에게 이번 방문과 관련 일본의 독도 영유권을 주장하며 "일본과 한국의 의견 차이가 있으니 입장을 얘기할 필요가 있다"고 주장했다.

이들 의원들은 지난 29일 외교통상부가 일본 정부에 해당 의원들의 입국 금지를 사전에 통보했지만 이날 오전 8시55분 하네다발 김포행 항공기에 탑승했다.

일본 자민당 의원 3명이 한국 정부의 사전 입국 금지 통보에도 불구 예정대로 입국을 강행하면서 한일 외교 관계가 급속도로 냉각될 것이라는 전망이 제기되고 있다.

한편, 이번에 방한을 강행한 자민당 의원들과 함께 독도 영유권을 주장해 온 일본 다쿠쇼쿠(拓殖)대 시모조 마사오(下條正男) 교수는 전날 오후 9시30분 인천공항을 통해 몰래 입국하려다 입국심사대에서 적발돼 1일 오전 1시40분 일본으로 되돌아갔다.
