Photo festival has faces going places
This 1936 photo of an immigrant family by Arthur Rothstein is part of the “American Perspectives” exhibition at this year’s Dong-gang International Photo Festival in Yeongwol, Gangwon.
Now in its tenth year, the Dong-gang International Photo Festival in Yeongwol, Gangwon, has become the nation’s premiere festival for photography.
Today, the festival attracts a broad audience of young and old, aspiring photographers and professionals, casual observers and photography connoisseurs.
The festival, the oldest photo festival in the country, drew 35,000 visitors last year, up from 4,000 just four years earlier. The increase in attendance has gone a long way toward establishing Yeongwol, a city of 40,000, as a hub of Korean photography.

The flagship exhibition is “American Perspectives,” organized by Deborah Klochko, director of the Museum of Photographic Arts in San Diego, and Sarah Lee, an independent curator based in the United States. The exhibition displays 126 photos from the early 20th century to the 1970s captured by legendary American photographers such as Ansel Adams, famous for his landscape photography; William Klein, known for his street photography; Dorothea Lange, best known for her photos of the Great Depression; Alfred Stieglitz, an influential photographer and art impresario; Walker Evans, another Depression-era photographer; and 16 others. “American Perspectives” is in the main building of the Dong-gang Museum of Photography.
Photos taken by Oh Hein-kuhn, winner of the 10th Dong-gang Photography Award, adorn the building’s annex. Inside the annex, the “Memory of 10 Years” exhibition shows work by the award’s previous winners, such as Choe Min-sik, Seong Nam-hoo, Atta Kim and Kang Heung-goo.
The adjacent outdoor gallery features the “Reading Faces” exhibition, which shows photos of people’s faces. Also included are works by Korean photographers Nanda, Jo Areum and other artists.

Meanwhile, the Yeongwol Culture and Arts Center displays photos showcasing their creators’ diverse attitudes towards photography.
In addition to the exhibitions, the festival offers several educational programs, including one that provides photographers with the chance to have their portfolios reviewed by well known photographers, including Klochko; Lee; Junk Ogawa, the director of Magnum Photos in Tokyo; and Maurice Ortega, director of the Queensland Center for Photography. There are also lectures and photo workshops.

폐광지서 꽃핀 ‘순간의 예술’
피서객 3~4만 명 눈 씻고 간다
강원도 영월군 ‘동강국제사진제’는 ‘패밀리 세트’다. 사진 전문가 혹은 지망생을 위한 ‘미국 사진 반세기’전부터 가족 단위 피서객들이 “우리도 이랬지”하며 볼 수 있는 ‘전국 초등학생 사진 일기 공모전’까지, 미술계에서 가장 전위적인 사진들을 모아놓은 ‘적과의 동침’전부터 영월 지역 사진가들이 이곳의 변화상을 기록한 ‘상동의 어제와 오늘’전까지 나이대로, 눈높이대로, 취향대로 갖췄다. 국내 최고(最古), 10년 관록을 자랑하는 국제사진제답다.
영월 동강은 긴 시간을 굽이지르며 흐르고, 순간의 예술인 사진은 어느새 10년을 회고한다. 인구 4만명의 소도시, 한때 광산으로 흥성거렀던 폐광지 영월은 2002년부터 사진축제를 시작했다. 각 지자체마다 그만그만한 축제들이 생겼다 없어졌다 하는 마당에 동강을 끼고 시작된 이 사진제는 10년간 꾸준히 열리며 영월을 박물관 도시이자 사진 도시로 자리매김토록 하는 공을 세웠다. 시작 당시 2억 5000만원 가량이던 예산은 올해 5억 5000만원으로 두 배 이상 늘었고, 2006년 4000명에 불과하던 방문객은 지난해 3만 5000명을 넘어섰다.
보도사진가전 ‘얼굴, 인생을 읽다’에 출품한 권혁재 본지 사진전문기자의 ‘동양화가 박병춘’. 10회째를 맞아 올해 사진제는 10가지 모듬전(展)이다. ‘흐르는 시간, 멈춘 시각’이라는 주제를 관통하는 메인 행사는 동강사진박물관에서 열리는 ‘미국 사진 반세기’전이다. 미국 샌디에고 사진예술박물관 데보라 클로치코 관장과 독립 큐레이터 사라 리의 공동 기획으로 사진사에 중요한 위치를 차지한 20세기 초반부터 1970년대까지의 미국 사진 126점이 나왔다. 미국의 광대한 대자연을 담은 언셀 아담스, 카메라를 향해 총부리를 겨눈 소년을 찍은 윌리엄 클라인, 30년대 경제 공황기의 황폐한 농촌을 발로 뛰며 찍은 도로시어 랭, 즉물사진의 선구자 알프레드 스티글리츠 등 오늘날의 미국을 미국이게 만든 사진, 미국 사진을 세계적으로 만든 사진들이 대거 전시됐다.
박물관 별관에서는 올해 ‘동강사진상’ 수상자인 오형근 개인전과 최민식·성남훈·김아타·강홍구 등 지난 10년간 동강사진상을 거쳐간 이들의 회고전인 ‘10년의 기억’도 열린다. 박물관 야외 전시장에서는 권혁재·석재현·최재영 등 저널리스트들의 사진전 ‘얼굴, 인생을 읽다’가, 박물관 주변 곳곳에서는 난다·조아름 등 젊은 사진가들의 거리 설치전이 벌어진다. 학생체육관에는 미국 미주리대 저널리즘 스쿨이 주최하는 국제 보도사진 축제(POYi)의 대표작 143점이 나와 오늘날의 세계상을 볼 수 있다. 문화예술회관에선 사진의 파격을 보여주는 젊은 사진가들의 전위적 전시 ‘적과의 동침’과 강원도 사진가 초대전이 열린다.
기반시설도 확충했다. 그간은 숙소가 마땅치 않아 국제 사진제에 참석한 국내외 손님들도 모텔에 나눠 묵었는데 올해는 동강시스타리조트가 개장, 피서객 맞을 준비를 마쳤다. 9월 25일까지. 성인 3000원. 033-375-4554.
