Olympian Wariner will miss Daegu Worlds

NEW YORK - Former world and Olympic 400-meter champion Jeremy Wariner will miss the world championships later this month in Daegu, with a torn ligament in his left foot.

Wariner tore a ligament near his second toe while training last month. The extent of the ailment wasn’t diagnosed until this week.

“I am disappointed that I will not be able to try to regain the world title in the 400 meters in Daegu,’’ Wariner said in a statement issued Tuesday night.

Wariner, who won world crowns in 2005 and 2007, already pulled out of a meet this weekend in London because of the injury, which causes him pain each time he pushes down on the foot. “He can’t run on it. He just can’t go,’’ his agent Deon Minor said.

And with the 2012 London Olympics only a year away, Wariner’s medical staff didn’t want him to take any chances. “Right now my focus is to get healthy,’’ Wariner said. “I wish my teammates the best in Daegu.’’

The injury puts the anticipated showdown between Wariner and reigning world champion LaShawn Merritt on hold. Merritt has been out for 21 months as he served a doping ban. He returned last week and took second place at a meet in Stockholm.

[대구세계육상]男 400m 강자 워리너, 발가락 부상으로 불참

육상 남자 400m의 유력한 우승후보 중 한 명인 제레미 워리너(27·미국)가 발가락 부상으로 대구세계육상선수권대회(27일~9월4일)에 불참한다.

AP통신은 3일(한국시간) 2004아테네올림픽 남자 400m 금메달에 빛나는 워리너가 왼발 두 번째 발가락 근처 인대가 찢어지는 부상을 입어 이달 말 열리는 대구세계선수권대회에 출전하지 못한다고 보도했다. 5일부터 시작되는 런던그랑프리대회도 출전하지 않기로 했다.

워리너는 "대구에서 세계선수권 타이틀을 되찾으려던 목표를 시도조차 할 수 없게 돼 매우 실망스럽다"고 말했다.

아테네올림픽 남자 400m를 비롯해 3관왕을 달성한 워리너는 2005년 헬싱키, 2007년 오사카 세계선수권대회 400m에서 2연패를 기록한 이 부문 강자다. 2009년 베를린대회에서는 2위에 올랐다.

워리너는 "지금은 부상 회복에 집중하겠다. 동료들이 대구에서 최고의 자리에 오르기를 빌겠다"며 애써 아쉬움을 달랬다.

워리너가 불참함에 따라 이번 대회 하이라이트 중 하나로 꼽혔던 라숀 메리트(25·미국)와의 맞대결도 무산됐다. 메리트는 베를린대회 400m에서 워리너의 세계선수권대회 3연패를 좌절하게 한 주인공이다.

메리트는 지난해 사적인 이유로 약물을 사용했다가 도핑 테스트에 적발돼 21개월간의 선수 자격 정지 처분을 받았다가 최근 복귀해 대구세계선수권대회에 나설 예정이다.

한편, 남자 400m에는 의족 스프린터 오스카 피스토리우스(25·남아공)도 출전할 예정이다.
