Students get to be Korean for a day

Kim is a renowned etiquette instructor who has just made a new film that he hopes will help further his mission of introducing students, both Korean and foreign, to traditional Korean culture. The students at the forum were among the first to see the film, which Kim will also present overseas in the fall.
The forum, called Han-on, was a four-day international forum at the university in Jongno District, central Seoul, that aimed to introduce Korean history, pop culture and technology to students from overseas.
“I decided to participate in the forum because I thought it was a good opportunity to help foreign students understand traditional Korean etiquette,” Kim said.
Kim’s workshop, held on the second day of the forum on Tuesday, was attended by about 150 students from 22 countries. It included a screening of the film and a demonstration of traditional etiquette.
The film, “Hunjang and the Mischievous Boys,” follows 50 elementary school students who are studying etiquette at Cheonghak-dong Village on Mount Jiri in South Gyeongsang, which is where Kim is from. The village has about 200 residents who practice traditional Korean customs, wear traditional Korean clothing and farm using traditional methods. Kim both directed and starred in the film.
“Hunjang” is an honorific for teacher and used to refer to a teacher of general academics but now refers to a teacher of traditional etiquette.
During the workshop, students were also given the opportunity to try on hanbok (traditional Korean clothing) and learned how to bow.
“I didn’t know much about traditional Korean manners, but Kim’s movie and lecture helped me understand more about Korean culture,” a student from Nepal said.
Kim plans to screen the movie at select theaters in Los Angeles and Chicago in September, which is when Koreans celebrate Chuseok, the fall harvest holiday.
“I have no doubt that the movie will be a success because it offers moral lessons while entertaining audiences with its funny yet touching story,” Kim said.
“I think the movie could also provide second- or third-generation Koreans living in the U.S. with a good opportunity to better understand their origins.”
Kim said he hopes to produce more movies for children introducing diverse Korean traditions because he believes that film is one of the best educational tools available.
“The next movie will talk about pansori (theatrical form of narrative singing), which I believe is the forerunner to K-pop,” he said.

2일 오전 서울 명륜동 성균관대 경영관 지하 3층 소극장. ‘청학동 훈장’으로 알려진 김봉곤(44) 한민족 예절학교 훈장이 ‘세계 대학생 국제포럼’에 참석한 학생들을 대상으로 최근 자신이 만든 영화 ‘훈장과 악동들’ 시사회와 한국 전통예절과 문화에 대한 강연을 했다. 대학생 국제포럼은 성균관대 학생단체인 ‘한온(HAN ON)’이 외국 학생들에게 한국을 알리기 위해 올해 처음 마련한 행사다. 행사의 일부로 진행되는 김 훈장의 이날 시사회·강연에는 22개국 150여 명의 외국 학생이 참석했다.
시사회장에서 만난 김 훈장은 “시대와 나라에 따라 예절의 표현은 달라도 그 핵심은 타인에 대한 배려”라며 “우리 청소년들뿐 아니라 외국 학생들이 한국의 예절을 이해하고 익히는 데 도움을 줄 수 있을 것으로 봐 오게됐다”고 말했다.
‘훈장과 악동들’은 예절학교에 들어온 초등학생 50여 명이 2주일간 교육을 받는 과정을 담은 가족영화다. 김 훈장이 감독에 주연까지 맡았다. 지난 6월 경남 창원에서 첫 시사회를 가진 후 지금까지 군부대·공공기관 등에서 15차례 시사회를 했다. 이날 영화 시사회는 중간 중간에 핵심 내용을 영어로 설명하는 방식으로 진행됐다. 네팔 출신인 지반 포렐(26·공주대 환경공학)은 “한국 문화예절에 대해 이야기로는 들었지만, 이렇게 영화를 보고 강연을 들으니 더 쉽게 이해된다”고 말했다.
김 훈장은 ‘훈장과 악동들’을 앞으로 극장에서 개봉하고 해외에도 진출할 계획이다. “우리 교민이 많은 미국 로스앤젤레스(LA)와 시카고에서 추석 때 선보일 것이다. 영화에 웃음과 감동, 깨달음이 있어 자신있다.”
그는 정식으로 영화를 배우지는 않았지만 한국문화학교 공연예술아카데미 연기반을 수료하고 1990년대 초 대학로에서 연극을 하기도 했다. 김 훈장은 이번 영화를 계기로 앞으로 우리 문화와 예절에 관한 영화를 더 만들어 보급할 계획이라고 했다. 영상에 익숙한 요즘 청소년에게 영화는 가장 효과적인 교육 수단이라는 것이다. 다음 작품은 “K-팝의 원조인 판소리를 주제로 하는 영화가 될 것”이라고 말했다. 이와함께 이용태 퇴계학연구원 이사장(전 삼보컴퓨터 회장)과 손잡고 인성교육에 대한 동영상을 제작하고 교육 프로그램도 운영할 계획이라고 밝혔다.
