Three dead, one missing as Muifa moves north

The Korea Meteorological Administration lifted warnings for most parts of the country yesterday but warned of more rains to come today as Typhoon Muifa, which claimed three lives and left one elderly man on the missing list, crept north after causing mass evacuations in east China.

The weather agency forecast precipitation of between 20 and 70 millimeters across the nation today, with this extending to 100 millimeters for the south coast and Mount Jiri in South Gyeongsang, as well as northern Gyeonggi and the Yellow Sea near the Northern Limit Line.

The typhoon lashed the peninsula yesterday when it reached maximum wind speeds of 97 kilometers (60 miles) per hour and ravaged property and farms in some regions. Muifa was later downgraded to a storm.

A 64-year-old man surnamed Lee is believed to have been swept away by huge waves at a seawall in Saha District in Busan on Sunday, police said. A friend of the missing man informed the authorities that Lee went there to collect his handcart and had not been seen since.

Meanwhile, rescue workers in South Jeolla said yesterday that a 75-year-old fisherman was found dead on Sunday at the dock in Wando. He was attempting to tie his one-ton boat to the port when he was engulfed by the roiling waters. A 50-year-old woman surnamed Park was washed away by a stream in Hwasun County on the same day.

Approximately 32,000 households suffered temporary blackouts yesterday in South Gyeongsang as the inclement weather toppled utility poles and trees, cutting power lines. Incheon International Airport saw 15 flights to and from China cancelled and another 23 delayed.

On the tourism hot spot of Jeju, about 30,000 people flocked to the departure lounge yesterday at Jeju International Airport as they attempted to flee the wind-and rain-buffeted island. Over one-quarter scrambled to get on 30 additional flights hastily arranged by the Korea Airports Corporation.

Jeju officials reported that residents on the island had lost about 2.6 billion won ($2.4 million) worth of assets so far due to the typhoon, while a 600-year-old elm tree considered a part of the island’s heritage was also destroyed.

Meanwhile in South Jeolla, 30 hectares of an abalone farm near Jungni Beach in Wando were left in tatters yesterday by Muifa, causing an estimated 5 billion won in damage. Mount Jiri was among the worst hit areas.

태풍 '무이파'가 한반도에 남긴 것은

제9호 태풍 `무이파`가 한반도를 강타하며 강한 비바람과 함께 곳곳에 생채기를 남겼다. 태풍은 서해상으로 북상하면서 서울과 경기도를 포함한 수도권과 남부지방에 인명·시설 손해를 끼쳤고, 항공기가 결항되는 등 피해가 속출했다.

무이파는 8일 밤 늦게 한반도를 벗어나 신의주 부근에 상륙할 예정이다. 태풍의 영향에서 벗어났지만 흐린 날씨는 계속된다. 9일 한반도가 북태평양고기압 가장자리에 들면서 전국적으로 구름이 많을 전망이다.

중앙재난안전대책본부에 따르면 8일 오전까지 태풍으로 3명이 사망하고 1명이 실종됐다. 89세대 197명의 이재민이 발생된 것으로 집계됐다. 전남과 제주 등 6개 지역에서는 정전피해가 일어났다.

공공시설도 피해가 잇따랐다. 전남 신안 가거도에서는 방파제 200m, 전남 장흥에서는 선착장 5m가 유실됐다. 태풍은 문화재까지 덮쳤다. 천연기념물 161호인 제주 서귀포 성읍 팽나무 1그루 밑동이 부러져 조선시대 관아 건물 `일관헌` 1동이 반파됐다.

제주국제공항에서는 지난 7일 오전 8시55분 이후 출발 및 도착 항공기 361편이 전면 결항됐다 이날 정상 운행했다. 8일에는 인천항 연안여객터미널 운항이 전면 통제돼 전 선박이 결항됐다.

태풍은 한반도 곁을 지나면서 강도는 중형, 크기는 소형급으로 약화됐다. 기상청은 이날 오후 4시30분 경기서해안과 충남서해안지방의 폭풍해일특보를 해제했다.

기상청 관계자는 "9일은 북태평양고기압 가장자리를 따라 많은 수증기가 유입돼 제주도와 남해안지방의 경우 새벽부터 낮 사이에 천둥, 번개를 동반한 시간당 30㎜ 이상의 강한 비가 올 가능성이 높다"며 "그 밖의 지방에는 낮부터 밤사이 소나기가 오는 곳이 많을 것"으로 전망했다.

한편 무이파는 마카오에서 제출한 태풍 이름으로 `서양자두꽃`을 의미한다. 이 태풍은 지난 달 28일 필리핀 부근 해상에서 발생했다.
