Ministry of Unification’s site attacked by malware

The Ministry of Unification was the target of an attempted cyberattack in the latest in a string of online attacks on government and corporate Web sites, though no damage was reported, officials said yesterday.

Unidentified hackers targeted the ministry’s Web site through malware, or malicious software, planted in a lawmaker’s aide’s e-mail, said Kim Young-pil, an official at the ministry’s cybersecurity center.

He said the center asked the aide to either change the password or close an e-mail account of a popular Web portal on Monday after being informed by the National Intelligence Service.

Government security analysts traced the attack to an IP address in a third country, another official said, without elaborating.

Officials said there are constant attempts to hack into the ministry’s computer network and those of other major government agencies.

The latest attempt came as Seoul outlined a nationwide cybersecurity strategy to better cope with possible attacks from the North and others.

Last month, the Web site of SK Communications Co. was hacked, compromising the private information of 35 million users in a country of 48 million.

Earlier this year, South Korea accused the North of waging a cyberattack that paralyzed the network of a major local bank. The North has denied the accusation.

The North is also believed to have launched cyberattacks on the South’s major government and corporate Web sites in 2009 and other similar assaults in March 2010.

The National Intelligence Service said last year that there were about 48,000 cases of cyberattacks on government Web sites since 2004.

의원보좌관에게 보낸 통일부 e메일 해킹당해

제3국 IP 경유… 통일부 사이트 해킹도 시도

국회 외교통상통일위원회 소속 의원 보좌관의 e메일을 해킹하고 이를 통해 통일부 사이트도 공격하려는 시도가 있었던 것으로 확인됐다.

9일 정부 소식통과 통일부 등에 따르면 이달 초 국회 외통위 소속 의원 보좌관의 다음 e메일이 해킹당했다. 해킹당한 e메일에는 통일부에서 제출한 메일도 포함됐던 것으로 전해졌다.

소식통은 "통일부에서 보좌관에게 보낸 e메일은 연구용역 결과"라면서 "홈페이지 등을 통해 이미 공개된 자료로 보안상 특별히 문제가 될 게 없는 것으로 안다"고 설명했다.

해커는 제3국의 IP(인터넷 프로토콜)를 경유했다. 제3국은 중국인 것으로 알려졌다.

해당 해커는 해킹한 보좌관 e메일을 통해 통일부 사이트에 대한 사이버공격도 시도했던 것으로 나타났다.

국가정보원은 8일 해킹 시도 사실을 통일부에 알렸고, 통일부는 해당 보좌관에게 연락해 e메일 비밀번호 변경이나 아이디 폐쇄 등을 주문했다.

통일부 관계자는 "구체적인 피해가 발생한 것은 없다"면서 "정부 기관을 상대로 한 해킹 시도는 일상적인 것으로 대비에 만전을 기하고 있다"고 설명했다.

통일부는 지난 6월 '통일 사이버안전센터'를 열어 사이버 위협에 대응하고 있다.

앞서 지난 6월에도 국회 정보위 신학용(민주당) 의원은 "중국이 내 방에 근무하는 보좌관에게 해킹 프로그램이 첨부된 이메일을 보내 해킹을 시도하려다 적발됐다"고 밝혔었다.

국정원은 정부기관에 대한 사이버공격이 2004년 1월부터 총 4만8천여건에 이른다고 지난해 10월 밝힌 바 있다.
